The Intelligence Community is Deadly Serious

My internet is down and will be down according to Verizon until late this afternoon. It crashed at the exact same time as every Russian story in the universe hit the webs last night. So, Im using my phones hotspot to connect and thats a little expensive. As a result, Ill keep this shorter than I otherwise would.
One way I can tell the Intelligence Community is loaded for bear and deadly serious about taking the Trump administration down is that former high-and-low ranking officers are coming out of the woodwork to shovel dirt on The Donald.
snip//
But I cant keep out of my mind the thought that, if an American intelligence officer had done anything like this, wed consider it espionage.
But I have a simpler way of gauging this. When the Allies cracked the Nazis ENIGMA encryption during World War Two they allowed people to march into certain death rather than risk revealing that they could read the Germans internal communications. But the fact that we intercepted the Russian ambassadors communications with the Kremlin was just presented as the evidence for Jared Kushner wanting to set up a private network with Moscow. That should be the most closely guarded secret we have, or close to it. So, to just go ahead and risk losing that capability is an indication of how serious of a risk they think Trump represents.
They would never reveal that information unless they thought removing Trump from power was a higher priority and that this information could lead to that outcome.

(102,352 posts)If, intelligence did leak it, then yes, it is astounding because of what it reveals in terms of our capabilities, but maybe it was Putin's crew....?

(17,984 posts)But it might be from an ally, too. There are some ally countries sitting on major intel. They see that the WH is setting up a war room to combat the Russia probe and figure that the American public will resist if they are made aware of some of the juicier bits. It might very well be blowback from tRump leaking their intel over the last few weeks.

(37,364 posts)Putin might be cutting his losses and shutting down this operation. It has not gone well because his partner Trump fucked it up with his big mouth. After all, he could have negotiated something with President Hillary Clinton.
It could be that the biggest Russian intelligence operation since "The Trust" is ending.

They learned of Kushner's attempt to set up a back channel of communication to the Kremlin this way.
This a-hole should be charged with treason for this.

(51,626 posts)We can't wait for 2018. We must spread the word that an INDEPENDANT INVESTIGATION MUST BEGIN NOW! Call congress (202)225-3121 to pass the bill introduced by house dems calling for an independant commission. Nothing will happen unless this gets done immediately. #Marchfortruth rallies next weekend in 110+ cities and Wash DC. Right now Bannon and the Donald's family(meeting with GOP) are working hard to crush this and they will succeed unless we speak up!

(14,537 posts)info for months. That they have released it now makes me think there is something bigger coming down. They are also leaking it to make sure this doesn't get covered up. They are daring the republicans to do something. The more the russublicans ignore this, more gets leaked, the wider the net.
McConnell has a choice. Go down with the rats or jump ship and rat them out to save his cheese. Of course he will have to retire from public office, but with his millions he won't be hurting.

I don't know how many more shoes have to drop for our Intelligence services to see that we're here folks.

But also, it is not news that perhaps ALL governments listen to each other, or
have the capacity to listen to each other. This has been going on a long time,
so we're not revealing much by confirming to Russia that we have ears.

(613 posts)In addition to the government being willing to burn sources (which will harm America now and in future) to get this ruling family into jail, the government has a PR strategy.
There are a few articles every day. They are letting the story come out slowly, to let Americans wrap their heads around this story, which is the biggest scandal in American history with just what we know now.

I hope your internet outage was not intentional. We may see more soon. I'm at an LA Fitness in Phoenix, and all 14 TV's upstairs are on Fox. I complained vociferously, but management did not change them.

(1,397 posts)In the wake of Trump's firing of James Comey, and now, with the latest revelations about the Trump family trying to set up secret communications with Russia, we now hear calls to "trust our institutions." Such calls are rooted in the belief that the institutions formed by our Constitution, laws and history are strong enough to withstand the occasional attack.
Not so.
In his recent work "On Tyranny," Yale historian Timothy Snyder examines twenty characteristics of the tyrannies that swept away democratic republics in Europe after both world wars. Snyder writes: " We tend to assume that institutions will automatically maintain themselves against even the most direct attacks." He then describes how Hitler and the Russian Bolsheviks destroyed institutions by depriving them of legitimacy.
Trump's senior advisor, Steve Bannon, describes our institutions, not as something to be protected and cherished, but as the "deep state," which is to be rooted out and destroyed.
Now we see that Trump himself is directly attacking our institutions. He fired and has not replaced every US attorney. Although he ha filled his cabinet secretary positions, he refuses to nominate people to the deputy, assistant, and deputy assistant secretary positions. Trump claims one of our most important institutions -- the free press -- is "the enemy of the American people." Now we learn that he so hates the institutions he is attempting to circumvent those institutions to talk directly with our most dangerous adversary.
Justice William Douglas warned us: As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air however slight lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.
Trump is well on his way to destroying the very institutions that have protected us from tyranny; night is falling.
