Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDoes anyone know if there's a Dem plan to make sure all the votes are counted in 2018?
Looked at the DNC site, and didn't see anything, even on the voting rights page.
I also cannot understand how after 2000, 2004, and 2016, we still have this horrible, vulnerable process.
I have already contributed to Let America Vote, but was wondering if the party was going to be proactive in time for 2018.

(68,593 posts)We can talk about it here. We have bigger fish to fry...if you win convincingly, it is hard to steal an election...we need to work on winning.

(11,243 posts)The state party of fairly dysfunctional, but we are challenging voter suppression laws through lawsuits and continuous demonstrations organized outside of party channels. They are effective. We are getting some wins in the courts. We took back the Governor's seat. But until we win some more elections, we are hamstrung.

(68,593 posts)They do care about healthcare and social security...we need to help nominate candidates and support them...and work our asses off to win in 17, 18 and 20...nothing else...talk is cheap as they say...actions speak louder than words.

(11,243 posts)When GOP is in charge of a state legislature and he Governor, they can pass horrible laws and then the only recourse is the judicial branch. That takes some time, but I can assure you it is done. What else do you think the DNC should be doing?

(2,116 posts)is not a serious issue, how are they ever going to get enough support to get anything done? it has been 17 years since 2000; we've had 2 repug presidents "win" under extremely sketchy circumstances, and yet as far as i can tell, the issue of election security is not even on the radar of the dem leadership.

(68,593 posts)Maybe some voters ( not saying your) need to look in the mirror and stop blaming the party for losses they caused. Nader cost us 2000 and Stein certainly cost us 2016.

(11,243 posts)And you can't make rank and file Democrats pay attention to stories that involve boring stuff like voter ID and gerrymandering until it is too late. Trust me. I have tried on both counts and fail wildly. You know what people here told me when I started posting about the dangers of voter ID waaaay back in the day when GA started the trend? Oh well, doesn't everyone have ID? Sounds like a good idea Supposed 'progressives' told me this.
The problem of lack of media attention does not even address the real problem which is the SUPREME COURT. It's the SC that is responsible for Citizens United and rolling back Voting Rights Act. Those are the primary reasons that the GOP can engage in the fuckery that is voter suppression and them dump massive amounts of cash into the system to sway our elections. It's LEGAL. When Dems don't control the executive and/or congressional branches of government, our only recourse is also legal. You understand basic civics right? Three branches of government, checks and balances? So under the current electoral situation, and given that our press is basically click bait infotainment, I ask again, what do you suggest that isn't already being done?
If you pay any attention to the big voting cases working their way through the courts right now, you ALREADY know that there have been some encouraging rulings recently. But of course they are all appealed and they re-tried at a hight level. SC just said they would not hear the NC voter ID case that was tried under Voting Rights, which means that the lower court ruling stands and NC will not be able to enforce that particular bit of filth. But all of this takes time and most people are not willing to educate themselves on the complicated details, so you don't see much about it in the press until things are a total dumpster fire.
Also note that the GOP is always innovating new ways to screw us over in ways that we do not notice until it is too late. The next round of gerrymandering is going to be accomplished by census manipulation. I am warning you NOW. GOP know they are going to be forced to draw better districts soon, so their next trick is to simply not count urban districts fairly and steal our representation that way.
NC GOP was block from implementing their monster voter suppression law by the Supreme Court, but they are already hard at work on a NEW suppression law they think they can get through the hoops. They never rest. So while you are bitching that the DNC isn't waving their magic wand to fix a bunch of things you are frustrated about, GOP is coming up with new ways to screw us over. Maybe you should focus on the real enemy.

(68,593 posts)a mathematical model to identify gerrymandered districts. Kennedy always said if he could have a real method for identifying such districts, he would take action...fingers crossed.

(68,593 posts)And with Trump in the White House there will be no right to vote legislation. We need to work on the state level to secure the vote...you think Trump who colluded with the Russians will pass pro-vote legislation. Again...tired of the idea that the Democratic Party has some sort of magic powers and can fix what was broken when Trump was elected. We will be lucky to survive this with anyone having the right to vote. And maybe some could join the party and not attack the Democratic Party or vote for useless third parties. Until we achieve party loyalty...there is no fix for the GOP winning and subverting voting rights.

(11,243 posts)They also seem to be ignorant of all the amazing work that IS being done to fight suppression. We just won the NC voter ID case. Wisconsin had a good win in their partisan gerrymandering case. But these things take time. We are ALL frustrated with the situation, but as you point out, there is no magic wand that will cure the problem.
