JULY 6, 2012 | BY MAIRA SUTTON
Today, two representatives of Public Citizen delivered the Stop the Trap petitionwhich has received over 90,000 signaturesto United States Trade Representative (USTR) officer Barbara Weisel. The petition is aimed at key government leaders and trade representatives of countries involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, and it calls on them to drop all provisions in the agreement that would place heavy restrictions on the Internet and digital freedoms. We have endorsed this petition along with OpenMedia.Ca, Public Citizen, Public Knowledge, ONG Derechos Digitales, Free Press, Internet NZ, and others.

(706 posts)The internet took down ACTA. The TPP will fall as well, slowly but surely. That I am confident in.

(706 posts)The internet may just be the most powerful political force in the world right now and the fall of ACTA is proof that politicians and corporate interests don't get their way if the internet unites. As I said TPP is no different than ACTA other than the fact that TPP is actually more evil of course. I am not denying that us citizens of the internet have a hard fight ahead of us but it is a winnable fight.

RB Tex LA is waking up to an America that has no tolerance for free trade.

(706 posts)but yeah now that you mention it she does look very unhappy about it. I'm sure the corporate lobbyists weren't too happy to hear ACTA go down. Now let's celebrate our victory over ACTA and we'll be sure to send TPP to Hell along with it!

(706 posts)which had to ratify it before it could become international law voted it down. I find it awesome that ACTA went down on July 4th aka Independence Day.

(706 posts)We're going to win this war for internet freedom. The internet is the most people powered communication and information tool out there and that is why the corporate interests are so afraid of it. That is why they want to censor it, to silence it, to punish dissent. This episode with TPP is a ACTA repeat and as the various citizens of different countries involved in the trade agreement across the internet learn about it they will put pressure on the countries representing them and this thing will go down just like ACTA. It may be a close call like with ACTA but I am confident TPP will go down when more people learn of it as well.

(8,244 posts)The TPP is a much broader "free trade" deal and treaty for corporate governance. Either we can stop it or at least influence it to where the worst parts are dropped. I totally agree with you that people in power want to censor and control the internet. They fear it like you said.
TPP is wrong in about 1000 different ways. The threat to internet freedoms is another serious problem with TPP. There are so many things wrong with it I can hardly keep up.
