Jim Comey, who at 6 foot 8 has at least five inches on Donald Trump, has loomed over his campaign and presidency for months first through his bombshell statements about Hillary's email, then by doggedly pursuing the Russia investigation and eventually getting fired for his zeal.
Next week, Comey comes out of the shadows, with Senate Intelligence Committee testimony scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday that promises to be the most gripping television to come off of Capitol Hill since the Clinton impeachment hearings or Watergate.
Leaks about Comey's conclusion that Trump was pressuring him, and his real-time documentation in potentially devastating memos, has the White House and its allies worried that this could be their worst week since taking office. The signs of worry:
- The White House floated a trial balloon about invoking executive privilege to block Comey's testimony, but quickly popped it two officials tell the N.Y. Times' Michael Schmidt that Trump doesn't plan to go that route. White House officials realized the optics were terrible: It'd look like they had something to hide. Plus Trump aides realize executive privilege isn't absolute so it wasn't a slam dunk, anyway. And even if the claim stopped Comey's testimony, it couldn't stop a free, fired man from just walking out and giving an interview or a press conference.

(22,037 posts)Don't get over-anxious, Charlie. There are several things to keep in mind.
First, Donald Trump has survived revelations, statements and actions that no one else could or would have. The list of his gaffes and unforced errors is as long as both of my arms. Any one of those events would have sunk most any other candidate.
Second, Director Comes hasn't testified yet. I know that the article points out that the White House wouldn't want the "bad optics" that would accompany their efforts to block Mr. Comey's testimony but it could be that Trump feels it would be catastrophic to let him testify. The "bad optics" might be better than the testimony. I know Trump would probably lose in court if he took that step but it would still delay Mr. Comey's testimony.
Third, remember Patrick Fitzgerald's inquiry into the leaking of Valerie Plame's status as a CIA agent? For months, we were told to expect Fitzmas when the special prosecutor would bring charges against Vice President Cheney and his associates. Ultimately, next to nothing happened. With Trump and his band of miscreants, I'll believe it when we see it.
Nonetheless, if Mr. Comey does testify on Thursday, it'll be a show to watch.

(11,686 posts)has a bad day or week mine is much better. It gives me something to smile about. Am I a bad person for feeling that way? I never used to be that kind of person until trump came into office.

Hasn't hurt me at all, actually led to my getting politically active.
Eventually it subsided into occasional "Harrumph" after he was out of office.

(8,626 posts)I'll bet everyone will be tiptoeing around 'Donnie Dearest' this week. Wouldn't want to set him off.
I'm much more relaxed these days because his bad days are turning into bad weeks and bad months. No one is allowing this to become a new normal.

(3,867 posts)Trump said Thursday he was thinking of this Russia thing with Trump when he resolved to fire Comey, whose agency is leading an investigation into Russias interference in the presidential election. The comment to NBC News conflicts with Trumps explanation to members of Congress earlier in the week that he dismissed Comey at the recommendation of the Justice Department, which cited the FBI directors handling of the investigation into Hillary Clintons use of a private email server while secretary of state as the reason he should be fired.

(13,340 posts)If he had just kept his mouth shut, it'd still be bad for him, but it would have been bad for him, but a matter of he said, he said. But the Mango Moron can't help himself. He had to brag to the Russians. He had to tell Lester Holt how cool he is. Now he is F-U-C-K-E-D.

(129,165 posts)and right there, that symbolic imagery in the world of Drumpf power plays, apparently caused all sorts of insane rage in his mind. To have to "look up at" someone who is an "underling" is an insult, and he had to be removed post haste.
And the thing about Comey is that (outside of the above video) he tended to saunter around and among people with a certain arrogant air about him, so that would have been 2 strikes from the orange menace.

(18,124 posts)Comey is going to be a straw that will help, with other straws, to break this camels back, is wishful thinking. Don't get me wrong I hope this straw is so heavy that the administration will feel the pressure after Thursdays disclosures, I'm just not sure, because of spin and media compliance, that it will be damning enough. But I hope like the rest of US.
