Maher offended with words and has apologized. Those who turned on a good liberal over what he said could be considered to have demonstrated insufficiency in the good character traits of humor, loyalty, and tolerance. They should now accept Maher's apology and give him one of their own back. That would be the right thing for them to do in my opinion. Then everyone is good again.

(39,376 posts)Since when does the RW media like to see us stand up for people who quite effectively tear them a new asshole every time he talks about them?
cyclonefence
(4,483 posts)why we are being encouraged to stop talking about something that concerns us. I understand that RW spies and bots keep track of mentions, but why should our freedom to speak be impeded by that? And if we shouldn't talk about these things here, where is it OK to talk about them.
Discussions about democratic politics, both good and ugly, are why I'm here.

(13,186 posts)And those who criticized Maher arguably did do something wrong. We don't offer apologies only because we think we owe them. We also offer apologies if we think it is anywhere within reasonable that someone else thinks we owe them. Apologies are like thanks to a degree. It's better to overdo them.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Apologize for even suggesting as much.
Maher gave a weak worded apology because it was required of him- he's not getting as much as a thank you from me. But this OP deserves all the scorn I can muster.
Fuck apologizing for speaking the truth. Just nope.

(47,209 posts)A joke about the distinction between house and field slaves was icky, using those words made it more offensive. I get his overall intent- we all do. Doesn't negate the fact that it was offensive. Both those things can be true. I'm not calling for anyone to be fired but the blanket "but...many of his guests/ women he sexes are black" is just embarrassing.
Warpy
(111,292 posts)He didn't use that word hurtfully against anyone else. I think he was just flummoxed.
It's really not worth all this hyperventilation. He apologized for a bad joke that didn't land, which is what that was, using a word that people find offensive when it's used against other people.
Choose your battles carefully. This one is not worth it.

(47,209 posts)posts. Well yeah, so much for empathy and solidarity guys. This is how we got to Trump, apathy and selfishness. It matters.

(111,292 posts)It was tacky. He apologized. Consider the context unless this is the molehill you want to die on.

Just what are you trying to do here?
For prosperity:
28. i dunno about you but our side needs some pitbulls who may sometimes offend us to get.....
..their (our) message across. Criminey how many times have I had to listen to the 'C' word or the 'B' word...or suffered the indignities of simply being female. Yes he said it was wrong but don't stifle his voice...or HER voice over it, we NEED people like Bill and Kathy and Alan Greyson and hell yes even Anthony Wiener who can and will get in the gutter, when we wont, and fight like hell for us...because we don't want to get our hands dirty. I would rather they be on OUR side than the other.
If we are going to be squeaky clean we are gonna keep losing.

(108,980 posts)are the fans of Mahers who insisted on supporting his right to make a slavery joke with the N word, and who still insist he was some kind of victim.
He's the one who made a mistake, not the people he offended or those who called him out on it.

(7,412 posts)From the right and the left, anyone that goes outside the lines on either side is now subject to immediate boycotts and calls for ouster. Don't really care for it, seems to damper free thought in my opinion.
Squinch
(50,957 posts)in any of these discussions has called for a boycott or an ouster. The only ones who have mentioned boycotts or ousters are the ones defending the racist remark that Maher himself said was unacceptable.
No.. just no. Accepting an apology is one thing but how the hell should someone offended by what he said have to apologize for questioning him?
Being a 'good Liberal' does not give someone a pass for these type things. We call our own out and we should never stop holding each other accountable for such things.

(1,427 posts)are A*holes. I guarantee if you got Jaime Foxx, Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle together and ask them they'd laugh their collective asses off at how stupid white people are. Do you not get it - TRUMP is president. That's where your concern should be.
SaschaHM
(2,897 posts)Maybe your "concern" should be directed towards the white people that continuously put him and folks like him into power.
