From an article..a quick ovrview, of Watergate:
As Hunt's demands for "hush money" persisted, John Dean, a White House lawyer, privately told Nixon that there was "a cancer on the presidency."
When the FBI finally pierced the White House denials,
**senior officials faced prosecution for perjury and obstruction of justice.**
In April 1973, four of Nixon's top aides lost their jobs, including chief of staff Haldeman, chief domestic policy adviser, John Ehrlichman, Attorney General Richard Kleindienst and Dean himself.

(1,007 posts)I was very little at the time and don't remember any of it. At that time, I believe we only received one television show and the national news would be every evening at 6:00 which we hated, which meant we left the room.

(60,010 posts)When Nixon was first elected, in 1968,it felt like it did now, that the Republicans were in control, that damn war was still going strong, plus Nixon had a mean streak and he let his VP, Agnew, publicly say a lot of negative things about the Left.
We had just lost MLK, RFK was killed running for Pres, stunned us all so deeply.
Suddenly, there did not seem to be a national leader for the left.
There were riots in the streets of LA, Chicago...the 1968 Repub. Convention was actually a riot, memorable because Dan Rather, IN the convention hall, was attacked. Major Daly gave the police permission to beat up the protesters, which shocked the nation.
LOTS of violence going on. That kept the front pages busy. And every night on the tv news...tv news was still only a night time thing, not all yak yak all the time, but serious news, so you waited anxiously for Cronkite or whoever to come on. Most homes had newspaper delivery, for the morning news.
It felt chaotic, it was the start of a now historical shift in social values, suddenly hippies were everywhere and us young adults were hearing new possibilities.
GREAT music.
So Nixon had the Watergate thing, which did not overtake him until he had been re-elected.
When he was re-elected, the entire country was marching against the war. He was a lot more unpopular.
and the news started to talk about Watergate cover-up.
People were shocked because the President, and the Gov't, were still respected. We all felt like we do now, that a man elected as Pres. was tarnishing the nation's House.
But resignation was unthinkable, it had never happened, it was a world rocking event.
It took so long to get him out because Congress was very hesitant to do such a drastic deed. Most of Congress back then had integrity, a sense of history.
Once Nixon fired his Attorney General for not firing the Special Prosecutor, all hell really did break loose and people were seriously afraid Nixon was trying to be a King.
THAT never sits well with us.
Not many people know there was, just like now, a Senate Investigating Committee at the same time as the Special Prosecutor.
Just like now, there were a lot of knaves involved, and Nixon lost them, one by one, to indictments. It took awhile.
The fall of the President took place on national tv..the hearings, the testimony, and the newspapers were doing honest reporting, esp. the Wash. Post.
Everyone was glued to the news, day in and day out. And more and more people turned against him with all the revelations coming out.
Trump is a cartoon version of Nixon, with a lot of egotistical similarities.
But we still do not sit still for treason.

(9,314 posts)It so brought all of this back as if it were yesterday. But different threads in our yesterday do seem to be weaving through our today. I can only hope this ends much more quickly than the Watergate scandal. I do not feel as if I can take months and months of this. I am unsure if this Country can restore itself to some semblance of true order and attempt to regain some respect from the rest of the world. It is not that the Special Counsel and all those assisting are doing the best job they can do; it is that while the are progressing, we have a volatile personality sitting in the Oval Office who at any moment can do the unthinkable. That exactly is the debacle.

(1,007 posts)but how did you handle the suspense? And did it ever feel like nothing was ever going to be done about Nixon?
I am afraid that by people's repeated acceptance of Dump's immoral, unethical, and mean actions, that the whole nation is slipping into an ugly quagmire, we may not be able to come out of. Am I wrong to feel that way? And people on some of these boards state that it is a long methodical process, and I think I could bare the slow pace, if at least I knew in the end, Dump was impeached.
With Rublicans majority in house, senate, and judicial.....I am having difficulties with any patience. And then....when I talk to a Dump supporter still....I just want to scream!!!

(60,010 posts)It was clear after he fired Cox that he was gonna go down. Every day to me was like a good mystery book. I had faith in the system then, and it was well rewarded.
Since the Tea Party/Koch brotehrs/Mercers et all bought themselves so many Congress members,
I have concerns about where we are now.
but I do know one thing for real: the pendulum always swings the other way, it is just a function of time.

(54,256 posts)Nixon appointed Ford as his vice president.
Ford had been a (more or less) well liked member of the House.
He was easily approved.
He was a moderate republican.
Not the brightest guy in the world, but at least fairly straight arrow.
Of course the Nixon pardon was a whole 'nuther thing.
I still think it was a done deal when Nixon appointed him and not an attack of conscience to 'bind the nation together again'.
Bull. Shit.
But facing Pense as prez is a whole different kettle of fish.
We would go from an religiously indifferent worm who does whatever he thinks makes him look good to an evangelical fanatic with a definite agenda.
That's almost as scary.
Maybe even more so.
Unless we can somehow bring both of them down I think we're screwed.
And THEN we get Ryan.

(60,010 posts)are also being investigated for, at a minimum, campaign $$$ from Russia.
chaffetz for sure is in $$$ trouble.
Nunes ought to be charged with obstruction, at the least, I would hope.
Do you remember when Nixon's pick of Ford was announced, and the debate was centered around if Ford would pardon Nixon.
I knew he would ( nice dumb man, remember?); and lots of folks were so angry at the idea of a pardon.
I was one of few who favored burning Nixon at the stake on the WH lawn, but sadly, my vote did not count for much.

(60,010 posts)He is going down. He has no friends. Putin is even back pedaling..I don't think he realized how stupid his patsy really is.
the whole planet except for maybe duarte, is pissed at him.
Europeans are feeding info. to our Intell.community, even our Treasury is giving info to FBI and Mueller has tons of contacts all over the place to get info.
I follow 12 people on Twitter, each of whom are looking at SEPARATE aspects of Trump world, and digging up all sorts of info. (Mensch is not one of them)
MSM is days behind some of this stuff, sometimes because there is so much to absorb.
It is a big case, but compared to Watergate it is moving at light speed.
The Republican Party itself is under investigation.
Plus, the opposition is really stupid, and keeps digging holes they will fall into. Trump tweeted another hole for himself today, when he refered to the "ban" he wants, while the courts are looking into his appeal on the last ban which he said was NOT a ban.....
Oooops...
and 2018 election is just around the corner.
dream on all of this tonight.

BREAKING: Pres will use Exec Privilege on Comey - says he's "willing to watch shit hit the fan."
If Trump does claim exec. Priv. it will end up in the courts, and he will appeal any decision as high as he can, meanwhile continuing to pillage the country.

(23,319 posts)I was a little kid but I can remember my parents watching television coverage of the watergate hearings in total shock. They would tell me that history was being made and they'd never seen anything like this. My dad was a federal employee his whole adult life. USFS. He took immense pride in being a public servant and he worked so hard. I miss him terribly and wish he were here to walk through this with me.

(23,547 posts)the idea that the insanity did end makes me feel better. nixon was pretty nuts, too. He just was able to act "presidential" at times. trump can't do that.

This is probably 15 or 20 years after Watergate. (Which, I don't remember.)
