And what I mean by 'contrarion's' are those people (and many of us have them in our circle of friends) that take the other side of an issue/candidate just to be 'smart-asses'. In this case - voted for Trump - because everyone else was voting for Hillary.
I can identify at least two in my circle of friends that did this for the election and actually do this for just about every major issue.
My thought is that there is a sizable portion of Trump's so-called base that is made up of these types of people.
I had occasion to be with these two people at a recent party and I talked to both of them. Both of them - after these first 130 so days of Trump's presidency have turned against him after seeing who he really is and what he has done. They are kind of sorry that they voted for him now and he has lost their support.
I'm wondering if this kind of thing is going on around the country and if this is the first line of Trump's base that will abandon him going forward. If that be the case - what percentage is left of his base that are solid Trump supporters?
As he does things to appeal to his base - at the same time he is turning off these people in his base that I labeled contrarion's.

(56,828 posts)but, not an insignificant amount. I work with an otherwise smart guy who voted Trump because he thought Trump would blow up the system and rework DC. Only now, he's realizing that Trump is totally unfit for office.
There are also a small percentage that voted for Trump because they figured that Trump was going to screw them over, but at least they knew he was, rather than making it look like they would fix things like Clinton, Stein and the libertarian guy said they would.

(115,712 posts)I do think a fair number voted for him because they hated Hillary. I don't know a lot of Trump voters but the few I do know don't fit the stereotype of the angry, uneducated, gun-toting white guy with a pot belly and a #MAGA cap. They are well-educated white-collar suburbanites, relatively but not extremely conservative, who just detested Hillary for reasons they couldn't quite articulate (I'm sure sexism/misogyny was the undercurrent, but the direct cause was likely 20-some years of slander). I would not call these people contrarians, though. They didn't vote for Trump just because they wanted to vote the opposite of how other people were voting. I do think all but the most fanatical Hillary-haters might be having second thoughts by now.

(2,396 posts)My very vocal Catholic family who voted for him have been silent for months. They haven't expressed regret, however, since it's all about the Supreme Court with them and everybody else (including the various generations of our family ) can all go to hell.

(406 posts)They're definitely the minority of trump voters, as are the "I voted for Obama twice" voters. The majority who voted for him did so because they believed in all the hatred he spewed. Trumps dog whistling on racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia and every other "ism" and "ia" spoke to too many of them for my tastes.
