Conservatives torch Comeys credibility ahead of Senate hearing
By Katie Glueck
WILMINGTON, N.C.
Washington will be riveted this week by the drama surrounding former FBI Director James Comeys expected congressional testimony.
But Republicans elsewhere in the country say they couldnt care less.
snip//
Nationally, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, operatives and donors have expressed alarm about the complicated, multifaceted issue of Russian involvement in an American election, some of which Comey is expected to speak to this week. Some, like Rep. Mike Simpson, a Republican of Idaho, have vouched for his credibility, especially given reports that he has contemporaneous notes from conversations with Trump.
But at this convention, which offered a snapshot of the Republican grassroots, many considered the broader Russia issue as, at best, a distraction from issues like health care and the economy. And others saw the swirling questions around Russiaincluding the Comey investigation and coming testimonyas pure partisanship driven by Democrats and the media to undermine the legitimacy of Donald Trumps victory last November.
The whole thing with Russia is nonsense, says Jim Gannon, a GOP activist in North Carolina.
Theyre desperately trying to justify why Hillary Clinton lost other than saying Democratic policies arent acceptable to people, said Gannon. This whole thing is a pretty desperate attempt at partisan politics. Wow, the Russians swung the election. What did they do, come and vote? No.
U.S. intelligence experts, including former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, have been adamant that Moscow did in fact interfere with the 2016 campaign, and intelligence officials have said Russia pushed for hacking of Democratic officials emails. Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied this, saying in a recent interview with NBCs Megyn Kelly that such an order could have come from anyone, including from Americans.

(17,622 posts)...esp cuz there was only some grumbling after bush won... twice...but not the overall absolute resistance to bush. The reason we are pissed is cuz TRUMP won. My gawd the GOP had a cpl sane candidates and they chose trump. How maddening is that?

Translation: we're desperately trying to justify why Trump won, because Republicans policies of taking away health care and raising the deficit by giving tax cuts to the rich aren't acceptable to most people. Our whole project is a pretty desperate attempt at partisan politics and deflection and deceit. "Wow, there is NO EVIDENCE Russia interfered in our election to Help Trump!" Obstruction of Justice Secret backchannels to the FSB are totally common, everybody knows that.

(34,661 posts)The Guy who will with out a doubt, given a chance, will be Al Franken. Reason I say that is,Jeff Sessions lied to his face and you will pay the price. After all in the Senate it is all about Seniority.

(7,768 posts)Which means she is privy to the really super-secret stuff. So is Grassley and I do NOT trust him one bit.
OK, one more question (or two actually).
Are the Senators asking for help from their aides doing research to come up with their questions they will be asking?
And 2. Do they coordinate with all the other Senators to make sure there aren't duplicate questions?
Thanks!

(34,661 posts)Congressional Aide, you would be surprised at the number of plain Ignorant Members of congress on most issues. And yes,Democratic Aides compare notes as to not was valuable Q&A time. Don't know about the Rethugs, seems they are handed Chamber of Commerce talking points of position statements.
