(21,573 posts)i dismissed her after that as a spoiled brat and embarrassment. Well now she has done something called "growing up" and while her music isn't my style, she is a hero in my book for what she's done these last few weeks. Tip of my hat to her!
And she is a million times the person and leader than 45, the scum of the earth, could ever even dream to be

(16,315 posts)But I hate the way she sung it, she ruined it with all those runs and embellishments.
wyldwolf
(43,867 posts)... it's a style originally created by singers of color. Some people don't 'get it.' I'll just leave that here.
Mosby
(16,315 posts)For example like the way Fantasia sung Summertime. She added a little of her own style but mostly stuck to the Ella version.
She was there to entertain HER fans who expect and appreciate that style.

(7,681 posts)Some things work for some songs and not others. That style doesn't work for that song. It's not a matter of 'getting it'.

wyldwolf
(43,867 posts)It's a style popularize and developed by singers of color. It's taught by vocal instructors. It really doesn't matter what song it is, people who 'don't get it' will always complain about it.

I doubt I'll ever buy a song by this pop star. But I'm very impressed by what she did.

Then don't. Easy choice.
Mosby
(16,315 posts)Is that while she has very good technical skills she lacks emotion. Singing over the rainbow the way she did did nothing to dispel that notion.

How does a concert change that? How does changing our Facebook profile pictures change that? How does tweeting change that?

(9,808 posts)They want us to give up on the imperfect and difficult ideals of democratic, egalitarian government and equal participation in society for all people. They want those young women locked up, ignorant and used as trade goods. They want us to quit and give up on civilization.
A concert defies that. It's tens of thousands of people saying they will not give in, give up, will not go away.
This world is still far less violent than it was when stupid, violent, young men wrapped themselves in iron suits and rode big horses into battle, and it's still less violent than it was when stupid, violent, young men wrapped themselves in blue or grey, or slogged through European or South Pacific mud. Civilization is winning, with every concert and protest and tweet of disapproval.
Don't give into the despair.

(420 posts)and respect. Every performer there and every person who attended put themselves in what had the potential to be another target site. Yes, there was a lot of security but it also had a lot of publicity and eyes of the world. Ariana, Katy, Miley, Justin. Coldplay, BEP, et al--good for you!! That was real bravery. Waving confederate flags, Trump bumper stickers, NRA teeny wieners packin heat wouldn't have put themselves in a similar position. Makes me sick that most of these performers are dismissed by the RWNJs a "Hollywood leebruls" yet show more courage and leadership than RWs.

(21,875 posts)I was very impressed with her doing this concert. I teared up when she sang Over the Rainbow.
From her wikipedia page:
At the age of ten Grande co-founded the South Florida youth singing group Kids Who Care, which performed for charitable fund-raising events and raised over $500,000 for charities in 2007 alone. In 2009, as a member of the charitable organization Broadway in South Africa, Grande, along with her brother Frankie, performed and taught music and dance to children in Gugulethu, South Africa. After watching Blackfish, she urged fans to stop supporting SeaWorld and became a vegan.
She was featured, along with Bridgit Mendler and Kat Graham, in Seventeen magazine in a March 2013 public campaign to end online bullying called "Delete Digital Drama". In September 2014, Grande participated at the charitable Stand Up to Cancer television program, performing the title track "My Everything" in dedication to her grandfather, who had died from cancer in July. Grande, who has adopted several rescue dogs as pets, promoted pet adoption and paid the adoption fees of 35 rescue dogs in connection with her concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City and American Airlines Arena in Miami in March 2015. In 2016, she launched, with MAC Cosmetics, a line of lip shades called "Ariana Grande's MAC Viva Glam". All of the profits benefit people affected by HIV and AIDS.
In May 2015, Grande and Miley Cyrus performed a cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" to raise awareness for Cyrus's Happy Hippie Foundation, which helps homeless and LGBT youths. The song was part of Cyrus's series of "Backyard Sessions" collaborations. In June 2015, Grande headlined the Dance On the Pier event, part of the LGBT Pride Week in New York City, In 2016, Grande joined Madonna to raise funds for orphaned children in Malawi. Grande and Victoria Monét recorded a 2016 song, "Better Days", in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
