(70,245 posts)The word gained currency during the English Reformation, as it was used to denote a person whose loyalties were to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church, rather than to the Church of England. Attested from 1534, papist derives (through Middle French) from Latin papa, meaning "Pope".

Oh, and the Russians are sadly maligned and really nice people.

(17,235 posts)Carter Page snickers way to much about everything he is asked about by Chris. Everything of substance is off the record blah, blah, blah. What a fraud.

(1,124 posts)kind of genius consultant. He just always comes of to me as some kind of nit wit. He's had quite a period of time since Chris Hayes interview to come up with some kind of plausible story and this is the best he can come up with? No wonder he came under FBI/CIA scrutiny long before this campaign. Every time he opens his mouth he creates more and more suspicion that he is in fact a Russian operative.

We were told if Kennedy won, the Pope would move to Washington and rule the country.

(99,710 posts)Al Smith and John Kennedy were victims of anti-papism in their electoral campaign but that was a long time ago and the latter overcame it any way as we progressed, even then.
Nobody is criticizing Page because he's Catholic.

I also recall when our minister preached against a Catholic President,
some people git up and walked out.

(59,504 posts)Everyone noted that Pope Francis looked far happier meeting President Obama (and Secretary Kerry and VP Biden) than he did meeting Donald Trump. Obviously, Trump ignored the encyclical on the environment (including climate change) that the Pope gave him. ( I don't think Hillary Clinton met with Pope Francis but I assume his reaction would be like his reaction to the Obama team)
Anti papist means at its root against the Pope - even extended to against the Catholic Church, he is the head of the church.
