My thoughts are with him and his family and with anyone else who was injured. Violence is NEVER the answer!

(34,137 posts)I am very glad that the only death was of the shooter.
I could also hope that Rep. Scalise will realize the dangers of the kind of weapons used in this attack and how his own actions have enabled the distribution of them to the kind of person that shot him and the other people this morning.

YMMV, but there's an old adage among catholics that the very best saints come from the very worst sinners. Maybe this can be his come to jesus moment re: American healthcare.

And lest we forget Scalise's role, as Republican whip in the House, rounding up just enough deplorable votes for Trumpcare, please consult with history; i.e., see last 2 lines in excerpt from New Republic.
We can NEVER condone, in any shape or form, the hideous terrorist attack on the Republican baseball practice session.
But we must NEVER forget to hold Scalise and the rest of the House accountable for their domestic terrorist attack on the healthcare of 24,000,000 needy Americans.

(81,590 posts)Stephanie Grace, a Louisiana political reporter and columnist for the past 20 years, first with The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and now The Advocate of Baton Rouge, recalled her first meeting with Mr. Scalise.
He was explaining his politics and we were in this getting-to-know-each-other stage, Ms. Grace said. He told me he was like David Duke without the baggage. I think he meant he supported the same policy ideas as David Duke, but he wasnt David Duke, that he didnt have the same feelings about certain people as David Duke did.

(34,120 posts)I came into the site late this morning and saw another thread that made my skin crawl. I thought seriously at that time about leaving here for good. It was like reading some of the worst of the crazy righty sites. Instead I took names and put them on full ignore because there are certain types of people I never want to be associated with and was stunned to find them here openly saying what they said.
Violence is never the answer and stupidity and hatred cross all boundaries and I was really sad to read what I read here.

(2,754 posts)If we are in a battle for hearts and minds, then being hateful ourselves wins no one over to our side.
Besides, it "feeds the beast," in ourselves, in our society.
Why did the nonviolent approach of Martin Luther King and others in the Civil Rights Movement convert public opinion? Its goodness and rightness appealed to the better angels of our natures and was attractive.
In turn the hatred and evil of George Wallace, the KKK, and other racists was repugnant.
Whether it comes from the left or right, hatred allienates.

(246 posts)I really am. I'm especially sorry the gunman died, because I think he genuinely cared about the issues, he just went down the 100% wrong path to take. As Liberals, we should strive to activists, not active shooters. I understand he feels his beliefs and objections were falling on deaf ears, especially considering the GOP town halls are erupting into "where's Waldo" type games as they run to the office and hide or get the security jackboots to toss us, but that doesn't mean to arm up and go crazy. That's what THEY do. Not us. THEY are the party of the Bundy Ranch, McVeigh, Maher Wildlife standoff, and more. I've seen genuinely concerned and fearful repubs in forums today, and the usual idiot trolls with the swagger talk, but very few dems condoning this and for that I'm grateful. It's fun to make a cryptic comment or two to watch them go crazy, I know, but try to keep it to a minimum, if at all.

The Causes he and his brethren make on a regular basis that set brother against brother, and make deadly weapons easy to get, can only create tragedies later.

(23,156 posts)He's the one who sponsored a bill that passed allowing people with mental health issues to buy guns and now he's in the hospital, shot by a crazy person. Sounds like karma to me.
The gun epidemic is out of hand totally due to the efforts of he and others like him. No one should be shot by guns, but it happens every day to many others who didn't do anything to cause this, while he took a direct part in creating this tragedy.
That being said, it should not have happened and I totally hate that it did. I hope he recovers and I hope this will have changed his backwards gun love, but I'd be very surprised.
