Sen. Susan Collins ✔ @SenatorCollins
I want to work w/ my GOP & Dem colleagues to fix the flaws in ACA. CBO analysis shows Senate bill won't do it. I will vote no on mtp. 1/3

(23,322 posts)starts a common sense bipartisan group to work on the ACA and make it better. That'd be something that would grab attention.

My bad. Sorry.

(2,497 posts)Yes, rhetorically, "making ACA better" is a republican label. But even Obama agrees that it can be, needs to be, improved. Democrats reclaiming "needs to be fixed" in a bipartisan manner is exactly what needs to happen (kind of like Trump appropriating "fake news" to attack the real media).
So yes, lets start a bipartisan discussion about expanding the ACA and fixing its problems.

(23,322 posts)In fact be improved upon if it weren't constantly undermined and undercut by rethugs. The ACA didn't throw 23 million off insurance. Surely you mean the AHCA? For practical purposes, we should call it TrumpCare?

The problem he has is, the first four think it's too mean and the last three think it doesn't go far enough.
If he moves toward the first four, he loses the latter 3 and probably Lee along with one to three others
If he appeases the latter three by going full 'Logan's Run' or 'The Purge' he'll lose the first four and likely Gardner, Flake and Caputo

(82,849 posts)Heller and Collins grabbed the only two available seats. No more defections allowed, so Vice President Pence can come striding down Pennsylvania Avenue and cast the deciding vote just before Independence Day, and President Trump can host another kegger on the White House lawn just before the long recess.

(51,609 posts)The entire time I said, out loud to my dog Spike, "I'll believe it when I see it". The House said the same thing, everyone sat back and breathed a sigh of relief then WHAM-O! In a heartbeat they passed an even more cruel version to appease the Freedom Caucus. I don't trust a Repub as far as I can throw one. I hope I am wrong. I will gladly pay the $10 that I bet last week.

He (trumpolini) cannot stay on message
There's nothing to be lost by voting against it because his position will switch like paper in a strong breeze
According to most things I've read, Collins wants to be Governor of Maine
Murkowski is pretty much unbeatable in Alaska
Heller jumps into the lifeboat
Johnson, Cruz and Paul stand on deck of the Trumptanic screaming, "the problem isn't the hole in the ship, it's that there are too many lifeboats!"
Portman debates whether to jump ship or go down with it because he's got 6 years to decide
All the while Capt Trumpqueed is screaming, "We need more water! No we need to fix the hole! The ship is going down! Everything is fine! Jump ship! Stay the course! It's all fake news about the damage to the ship. But, head for the lifeboats!"

It's awesome she referenced the CBO directly, along with working on the Affordable Care Act.

Obamacare is a tremendous benefit but I wish something could have been done regarding small business. Maybe nothing was viable. As soon as small business owners were bitching about the bill a few years ago I knew we'd lose even more white males. I know those guys from my Las Vegas years. Seemingly every young and middle aged white guy believes he'll be a small business owner some day. Even if he's a tap out gambler with no prospect of anything else. It's like picking the silver plan instead of gold or bronze. Those guys don't dream of owning a huge company since it doesn't seem realistic but they don't want to believe they'll always be stuck doing nothing or working for low wages for someone else. So small business is the ticket, the vague solution.

Note: they'll all line up to vote yes to repeal because trumpf ordered it, so it will be done.

(1,257 posts)I think that working to improve the existing ACA makes total sense, (hence it seemingly impossible).
I think that a GOP congress critter making such an open minded statement regarding said improvement is basically a good thing.
I don't seem to have any recollection of the Democrats making loud and obvious statements or gestures about the possibility or concept of working to improve the ACA with the Republican critters.
Has there been any statements by the Democrats regarding this possibility that I have missed?
As much as I detest the GOP as it is, a bi-partisan effort that would be actually good for the citizens of the US would be something that should be welcomed by all.
Fix, don't replace would be a nice slogan!
