I need a little here understanding the symbolism of handmaids with red cloaks and nun-like white hats. Can someone spell it out for me? I don't get it.

...and it really stuck in people's subconscious. Especially women-people. Now that Netflix (I think it's Netflix) has produced a tv series, the book is in reprint and widely available.

The premise: fertility has crashed, the US has been taken over by a fanatical cult, and young women who are presumed fertile are enslaved to procreate on behalf of the "rulers and their barren wives." This the the required uniform of the Handmaids. Fail to reproduce and you join the rest of the slaves at hard labor in the countryside.

Creepy then and creepier now.

Pretty easy and cheap to sign up if you don't mind the occasional commercial. You can also get it without commercials for a little more.

(I know some folks have hated on the movie but it did put the context of the book out there with an all-star cast)

The wingnuts are going to think this is a fantastic idea. We're nearly halfway there, anyway!

I am, not exactly enjoying the series, but I am appreciative of the stark effort (while fuming the entire time) to educate people - but I know some right-wingers are watching and taking notes. They have probably bought the book just to get more details.
