Tonight at the Brooklyn Academy of Music: "48 Hours at JFK: What Now?"

Presented by the New York Immigration Coalition and BAM
Special Guests: Camille Mackler, Nisrin Elamin, Ahed Festuk, Murad Awawdeh, and moderator Ahmed Ali Akbar

The New York Immigration Coalition hosts an evening of conversation around President Trump's ban on entrants from seven majority Muslim countries. The event begins with a screening of Micah Schaffer's 48 Hours of Resistance, a short film that goes behind the scenes at JFK Airport in the chilling aftermath of President Trump's executive order. The film features interviews with lawyers and organizers who worked tirelessly on the ground as well as detainees, to bring the full emotional picture to bear on what the events in January mean for America now.

After the screening the NYIC convenes a panel of special guests: Ahmed Ali Akbar, host of BuzzFeed's See Something Say Something podcast; Camille Mackler, Director of Legal Initiatives for the NYIC; Nisrin Elamin, a Sudanese graduate student who was detained that day; Ahed Festuk, a Syrian refugee who came out to JFK to offer her services as a translator; and Murad Awawdeh, Director of Political Engagement at the NYIC. They discuss the question of what happens next, including how citizens can organize and fight the Muslim ban.

The New York Immigration Coalition works to advance justice for New York's three million immigrants, representing their collective interests and advocating for policies and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all groups. A portion of the night's proceeds will go to support the NYIC and their work.
