The GOP is so desperate for power because they want to find a way to permanently "game the vote". Voter ID is really only just the beginning of what we will see in the future if they do get the kind of power they desperately thirst for. Rove and his minions have not given up their idea that the GOP will be the only party in this country with any political power. They believe that this time is their chance to take over and permanently guarantee their political power for generations.
Gaming the vote, gerrymandering, intimidation, politically redlining neighborhoods, infiltrating the education system, and using their bought media etc, or whatever secret plans they have is being pursued with vigor. Nothing would be more gratifying to the GOP and its supporters than to see that only THEIR votes count in the future. They are trying to get ahead of demographics when it comes to minorities, the poor, the elderly, the young etc. If they can pass laws, stack courts, disenfranchise opposition groups, they can very well succeed in this "one party" quest.
It is very clear by their rhetoric that they are ready to crush freedom and liberty despite the fact that they use such terms incessantly. The GOP view as we all know really is a white supremacist Christian nation. Now more than ever they are very open about what they intend. And they dare anyone to interfere with their plans.
Romney represents just one more step in the direction they seek even if he is not a Christian in their eyes. They are convinced that the money, distortion, media ownership and election fraud will do the trick for them.
Whether progressives like what Obama has done or not, he is our only choice right now. Perhaps he has learned that you cannot negotiate or compromise with these people.

The GOP say they are all about the "free market" and "competition", but they actually just want to squash competition and be a monopoly.

(789 posts)says it all. If they should gain the presidency and with it the power to name at least 2 and up to 4 Supreme Court Justices, they could semi-permanently alter the course of American Democracy. The Commerce Clause, voter rights, money in politics, executive power, you name it would be arranged by judicial fiat according to the wishes of the plutocracy.
