In the interview, Trump said he did not fault his son for holding the meeting. “I think many people would have held that meeting,” the president said.

Let’s be very clear about what the President of the United States just condoned.

What Trump Jr. did was take a meeting with a Russian lawyer after being informed that he would be given damaging info about Hillary Clinton, which was supplied by the Russian government.

As Slate noted yesterday, citing Fordham University School of Law’s Jed Shugerman, the president’s son likely violated 52 U.S. Code Section 30121.

The law states, in part, that it is illegal – duh – for “a contribution or donation of money or other thing of value, or to make an express or implied promise to make a contribution or donation, in connection with a Federal, State, or local election.”

The fact that a President of the United States is essentially applauding his own son’s collusion with a foreign government is stunning – even for Donald Trump.

Ted Leiu had a great analogy, if you get an email from someone telling you they had a bag of cocaine and you replied, "I love it! Be right there" it's a conspiracy to commit a crime, whether the coke was there or not is irrelevant. You went there knowing a crime was being committed. 8. The article states that this behavior is typical of the people in tRump's circle

but not the standard operating procedure in politics. I have to question that remark. In light of all the evidence that points to GOP corruption over the past few decades, maybe this is standard operating procedure. Maybe the fact that these people are pure idiots has exposed the corruption that has always been rampant in politics. Honestly, I don't feel now like I can trust our government to have impeccable moral standards. Also, the fact that tRump supporters condone this type of behavior (think it indicative of a strong leader) frightens the hell out of me.

makes mention of a "thing of value". We all know money qualifies as that. So does property.

The Trump family defense will settle around whether listening to someone talk is a "thing of value" in this case, especially if nothing came out of it. Listening to someone blather is worthless. I expect that will be the tack that they take.

If I was caught with a bag of (what turned out to be) oregano in my car, I couldn't be charged. If I was overheard by authorities saying I wanted to buy some pot, and then bought something I THOUGHT was pot, but turned out to be oregano, I'd still be charged with a crime, because of the intent.

PS, I live in Oregon, where the above is a completely moot point--in either case I'd get a "have a nice day, ma'am". In Pennsyltucky, I'm sure I'd get life without parole.

is that I know that cocaine is illegal for me to buy, its common knowledge.

Manafort and Kushner (I found out here that he's been to law school) surely would have expected to know the law regarding foreign entities. I would not expect Junior to be aware of it, and the fact that at least Manafort green-lighted the meeting was probably why he didn't question it. Let's face it, if this Russian had been an American citizen, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. It would be legal, plain and simple.

I know that ignorance of a law does not excuse breaking it, but there are innocent violations of campaign law all the time, and the parties involved are merely fined. That will be Trump's excuse to pardon Junior, Kushner had better hope that he is seen by Trump in the same light, and Manafort is toast.

But, when you are a senior person in the campaign - and, his attending with Kushner and Manafort means that he was high level, you are expected to know the rules. If I worked as a CPA and made a huge filing error on behalf of a foreign client with US business interests, I couldn't claim to the IRS that I didn't know the rules as an excuse. As a CPA, I should know the rules. Just like as a senior campaign official, Don Jr should have known as well.

12. tRump was speaking directly to his base and Repubs in Congress to let them know the position

they should take on this development---if there was any doubt for them. Should the fact that the pile of do do just gets higher and higher be having any impact on his base....like cracking the foundation....he comes riding in to tell them all is well. Nothing wrong here and those nasty reporters and journalists are just out to get me. Don't believe any of it. He knows he needs to shore up the base and since he was leaving for France for a few days, he needed to get it out there before he left.

Expect his faithful supporters in congress to take up the flag for him bright and early tomorrow morning. I will be surprised if there is not a full throated endorsement of what Jr. did. If you get queasy easily you might want to have some crackers and ginger ale handy.
