they were trying to get their hands on *illegally obtained* emails.

it's bad enough that they were colluding with russia to get information russia legally obtained.
but they were specifically looking for *hacked* emails. not just some backgrounder based on interviews and research and analysis of publicly available information, but specifically, illegally obtained emails.
that, also, would be bad enough on its own -- encouraging people to commit a crime so their campaign could benefit from the contraband.
but put them together and you've got something really outrageous -- encouraging a foreign government to commit a crime against an american.

18 U.S. Code § 371 - Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud United States
If two or more persons conspire either to commit any offense against the United States, or to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in any manner or for any purpose, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.
