he speculates that the new york times showed him a snippet of the email and said they were going to publish it, but allowed junior to make it public himself.

this at least let junior present it as he chose, rather than as the new york times chose. this also explains them boasting about "transparency".

it also makes a lot more sense than "contrary to all that expensive legal advice and unbelievably stupid even by the low standards we've come to expect from this crowd."
