(825 posts)The law sets a minimum standard of behavior. It's a fucking low bar. I want a president that conducts him or herself well above the law.
How stupid are we?

(11,738 posts)When emotions run high, we can be pretty "stupid" as you say. Literally, when emotions are activated in a strong way, the brain shuts down the areas of the brain where judgment and reason operate and it activates the autonomic response centers.
The limbic system is primitive and powerful. Think about a time when you may have driven home, and when you arrived you thought, "holy crap, how did I get here? I don't remember getting in my car". That is the limbic system.
Trump's supported are "activated" in that way right now. They are so emotional that they do not have the capacity for rational thought.
The rest of us, unfortunately are bound by rules of law. We have to follow due process even while the idiots in the White House are running amok. Some are also playing politics (Republican leaders) to slow down any processes because they are also trying to promote their agenda using Trump as cover.
"Stupidity" is definitely an element here, but there are a great many forces at work including, emotional arousal, apathy, and desperation. Throw in greed and antipathy toward the average citizen by the Republicans, and the usual slow process of law and you have a perfect storm of frustrating events.

(1,188 posts)when someone commits what they call an unpatriotic act of burning the American flag. But the unpatriotic/treasonous act of colluding with Russia to throw the election their way is no big deal to them.

(82,849 posts)Right now the framing seems to be about opposition research, and Trump supporters are eager to believe that's all it's about. Let's make sure we re-frame this story as disloyalty to the United States, and subversion of the election process.
