I've seen pocket veto thrown around in online articles that are about the Russian sanctions passed. Given that Congress is going into recess soon...what are the odds that Trump will wait til their recess to address what they send him?
Please correct me if I misread about pocket veto, but it looks like if he "sends it back" to Congress to address certain parts of it and it's not addressed by Congress within 10 days it doesn't become law.
If they are gone the month of August...no law. I could see Congressional repukes going oh, well, we tried...knowing damn well what was going to happen.
Are Democrats doing anything to prevent this from happening?

(and cannot return the bill to Congress within a 10-day period because Congress is not in session. Article 1, Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution states:
If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the same shall be a Law, in like manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its return, in which case it shall not be a Law.)

The 10 day period is for the President not Congress.
Democrats have little control over the timing of legislation currently.

(26,366 posts)the "pocket veto", they'd have to make a new bill (which could be identical of course).

(5,914 posts)They have to start the process again when they come back into session, which he can then veto for real if he wants.
But I doubt any of that will ever happen. He's just going to walk on it and hope that everyone will just forget all about in all the covfefe.
