(67,112 posts)denouncing his creepy speech.
FakeNoose
(32,748 posts)Trump has no right to turn the BSA Jamboree into a Trump Rally. It's completely unacceptable and the parents have a right to be livid about this. These innocent kids had no concept of what they were cheering for, and most of these boys were there without their parents to explain what was going on.
Trump can't get a loving adoring audience anymore so he has to use these innocent kids. It's completely outrageous that the BSA allowed it to happen.

(21,151 posts)The BSA is full of leaders across the political spectrum (I was one from 2004--2011). They jumped head-first into politics in the late 1990s with a homophobic stance compelled by the LDS. The membership suffered (at least in comparison to the GSA--which seems like a good benchmark).
They finally broke ties with the LDS and some of the bad policy. As things were turning around, Trump took a giant shit on the organization.
They did not ask for this. They (ironically) were not prepared for this. They have no idea how to make this right. So far they have come up with mealy-mouthed excuses in an attempt to deflect the issue.
If they don't come up with a meaningful way to separate themselves and the scouting values from Trump and his horrific display an organization that has done a lot of good is going to suffer terribly.
Lord Robert Baden-Powell is rolling in his grave.

(67,112 posts)all about scouting, learning things and working with people as a team. I was really stunned by what Trump said and then the endless applause for his debasing statements.

(5,122 posts)They didn't invite Donald Trump. They invited the President of the United States.
Up until now, they have all left politics out of their speech.
We're in new territory now.

Seems appropriate if he deleted it since it goes against the grain of who he really is or what he actually does.

(11,589 posts)It doesn't appear that he tweeted and deleted after the speech.

(16,937 posts)much comment about the "leaders" who were present that allowed this poor behavior on the part of the "youth squad" to continue.
Yes, kids are young and impressionable, but their "leaders" should have taken a responsible position and corrected an ugly scene.

(1,336 posts)are sponsored by rightwing evangelical churches? I'm guessing a lot, and perhaps that accounts, in large part, for the cult-like behaviour of the scouts in attendance at the Jamboree. Scary stuff.

(1,144 posts)I'm the mother of an Eagle Scout and I'm mailing my letter today. I don't know what's going to happen the next time we do a car wash fundraiser. People also stop by just because it's the Boy Scouts and they have such a tremendous reputation for integrity. Trump has poisoned the BSA the same way he poisons everything he touches

(59,592 posts)BSA is a private organization, so I don't think Trump can do anything worse to them than they already let happen yesterday.
On edit - Sorry, Akamai, meant to respond to your next post below!

(1,779 posts)also important. I would imagine that many of the good work projects the scouts do can be curtailed by trump if he gets angry.
He can sure motivate a lot of people to really hate the scouts.
And I am sure that trump and bannon can think of many evil ways to hurt the scouts.

JUST IN: Boy Scouts release statement after backlash to President Trump's speech at national jamboree

(20,219 posts)I hate that. Cowardly action of an authoritarian mind-set. It completely allows the most outrageous of actions to stand unchallenged, while allowing the spokesperson/organization to avoid the discomfort of walking the talk.
Akamai
(1,779 posts)impossible for the BSA leaders there to have stood up to trump. He has the microphone, the stage, etc.
But I sure hope that BSA criticizes trump, although that might be politically dangerous for them to do.
My view -- trump has created a terrible, terrible mess and he has been in office for just over six months
gratuitous
(82,849 posts)These are just kids, after all, and 11-17 year olds are quite possibly the dumbest creatures on the planet. But the BSA leadership knew this dog wasn't house-broken, and should have insisted on a transcript of the prepared remarks ahead of time.

(82,849 posts)And a bunch of them are going to follow the herd in doing something stupid. It's the BSA leadership that should have insisted on getting the text of the president's remarks ahead of time, and insisting that he stick with the script or his mic would be cut off. How inappropriate is it to have the president hinting around about a hookers-and-blow party on some wealthy guy's yacht? Someone for BSA should have been monitoring the president's remarks and ready to intervene.

(59,592 posts)That's after about ten minutes on the site reading through the comments.
Per multiple posters, BSA was pulling comments, but to no avail, with plenty of commenters urging everyone to adopt full screen-capture mode.

(5,057 posts)I earned my Eagle rank in 1969 and have often talked to folks about the positive aspects of Scouting. Well - all that ended yesterday. Scouts and their leaders in years past would have never allowed the national jamboree to turn into a Hitler Youth rally. Yes, Trump played the buffoon - again - but Scouts should know how to act when faced with hateful speech. It was SHAMEFUL!
I told the Scouting organization exactly that in a letter I wrote and I enclosed my Eagle Scout badge.
I'm done with them.

(129,449 posts)and she was livid and just unloaded. She is active in her local region and had indicated long time involvement in the organization (I think in various capacities over the past 15 years), and said that she has been calling the national HQ in Dallas almost non-stop.
I think you'll still have that hard core "30%" Drumpf idiot group out there who are probably cheering and chuckling... However I expect the vast majority of scout families are apolitical (and a good chunk are liberal) and are not political junkies like us on DU, but are realizing that this went way over the line, and are finally waking up and pushing back.
I come from a Girl Scout family (mother and sister were/are leaders) and I was one from Brownies to Seniors and I am glad to see that pushback.

(1,576 posts)At the local new station (WOWK Huntington) reporter virtually drooling
over the arrival of Air Force 1 landing at Beckley airport.
He breathlessly went through the landing, taxiing, even the opening of the door
of the plane, like it was the King of America arriving to bless his subjects.
Normally, I watch local news at 6:00 pm, but I changed the channel after about
five minutes. My God, these fools don't have a clue, nor do they no where
to buy one.

(788 posts)Held various leadership positions at both the troop level and council level, at one point being the Venturing President of the South Florida Council. Started as a wolf, and stayed involved until 2007. Served on summer camp staff in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Was a paid paraprofessional for the Gulf Ridge Council in Tampa for a smester jn college. There are no words I can use to describe how disgusted I am with BSA. I was looking to get involved again as recently as a few months ago. I was willing to look past the (former) gay ban. As an agnostic, I was even willing to look past the religious requirement, knowing full well if discovered, I could be asked to leave at any time. I was willing to do that because I devoted 15+ years of my life to the organization, and wanted to give back, I wanted to see the kids succeed. I wanted to make a difference in their life. If I could help even one kid in acheiving his (or her, for those in Venturing) goal, I could rest easy at night. No more. I am ashamed to acknowlede my youth activities. I refuse to become involved, i refuse to lend support, financial or otherwise, to such disgusting organizations. Until they undergo a fundamental change, I am through with them.

(111,339 posts)About the kindest comment was mine, that he obviously has no clue how to speak to children (which says volumes about his performance as a father) and a lot of parents, especially of the younger scouts, are going to have a lot of explaining to do when they get home.
A whole lot of people out there are talking about pulling their kids out of this organization. This is just the final straw on top of years of Mormon mismanagement and hostility toward anyone who isn't a straight Christian male. Overt hostility to the political majority in this country is not playing well, not even in Peoria.
