My understanding is that it is illegal for the UK to negotiate their own trade agreements while a member of the EU (collective negotiation).

(505 posts)they are in a very difficult position for Brexit negotiations already. Not sure how violating EU rules might help them get a better Brexit deal. If true, this might even guarantee a "hard brexit" where the EU kicks them out without a deal.
Of course, Trump is probably just making this up.

(115,836 posts)Even if he doesn't understand the rules of the EU, and that Britain can't negotiate its own trade deals while still a member, Teresa May and whoever else handles these things for Britain do know that. There may have been preliminary discussions about selling Spode teacups to the White House for state dinners in exchange for a McDonald's franchise next to Buckingham Palace or something, but there's no big deal in the works. Believe me. MAGA.

(101,361 posts)and it would be incredibly stupid to fix on anything until the status of the UK and the EU is determined.
There was a bit on BBC radio this lunchtime about importing American meat which has lower standards (eg allowing hormones and chlorine washing of dubious meat) than the EU allows.
Instead, a clearly irritated Fox saw the narrative somewhat derailed by questions about chlorine-washed chicken, part of concerns that the trade deal with America could lead to imports of food with lower safety standards.
While Fox complained the UK media were obsessed with the chicken issue, for others it highlights the compromises the country might need to make to shore up the economy after leaving the EU.

Fox is an arselicker of all things American, and putting him in charge of international trade was one of May's first bad decisions. He'd gladly eat chlorine-washed chicken with a rusty brown spoon, if it came from the USA.
