Their votes were what they were and they were consistent.
McCain voted based on some strategic calculus. He had zero concern for citizens. The women actually cared about their constituents.
Enough with the McCain praise. Yes, his vote mattered. But he is NO HERO in this. He's the same piece of shit he's always been.

Don't think that didn't make a difference.
And yes.... Murkowski and Collins are heroes.... but so is McCain. I won't deny him that.
The trio dealt a death blow to Trump's legislative agenda, and we will mark last night as a turning point.

(16,866 posts)This is just a part of the bigger "reality show" that our government is playing for us! McCain, the hero, votes against a bullshit bill, earning widespread praise because he's such a maverick! If anyone didn't think this was carefully orchestrated, well I've got some oceanfront property in AZ to sell you!!

(527 posts)They withstood threats and intimidation to vote no. Thank you. I believe both houses of congress would be more "human" if we had at least 50% female. How about a woman for president too. Remember Hillary committed to equal representation of males and females in her cabinet.

STATEMENT BY SENATOR JOHN McCAIN ON VOTING NO ON SKINNY REPEAL
Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) released the following statement today on voting no on the so-called skinny repeal of Obamacare:
From the beginning, I have believed that Obamacare should be repealed and replaced with a solution that increases competition, lowers costs, and improves care for the American people. The so-called skinny repeal amendment the Senate voted on today would not accomplish those goals. While the amendment would have repealed some of Obamacares most burdensome regulations, it offered no replacement to actually reform our health care system and deliver affordable, quality health care to our citizens. The Speaker's statement that the House would be willing to go to conference does not ease my concern that this shell of a bill could be taken up and passed at any time.
Ive stated time and time again that one of the major failures of Obamacare was that it was rammed through Congress by Democrats on a strict-party line basis without a single Republican vote. We should not make the mistakes of the past that has led to Obamacares collapse, including in my home state of Arizona where premiums are skyrocketing and health care providers are fleeing the marketplace. We must now return to the correct way of legislating and send the bill back to committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of aisle, heed the recommendations of nations governors, and produce a bill that finally delivers affordable health care for the American people. We must do the hard work our citizens expect of us and deserve.
I give him credit for doing the right thing and for telling the asshole to fuck himself

It does put him in fine company though.

(13,340 posts)AS well as every Democrat. Every. Single. One. Even Manchin.
Collins was a real hero here... never wavered.
Murkowski stood up to the bully.
And yes, John McCain, for whatever other weaknesses of character he has, did the right thing here.
We needed every single one of them.

(85,999 posts)...knowing just how much it cuts like a razor for the conservatives who want to believe they're omnipotent.
I can't think of anything more cutting than one of their own sinking this major and all-encompassing endeavor of theirs. Conservatives already hate McCain, now he's likely literally set them afire.
I don't think anyone here, btw, has any delusions about who McCain is. On this issue it was the republicans' to lose. Not ONE Democrat should have voted for repeal, so hurrah for Democrats doing what we sent them there for.
But McCain, with his opportunities to do the right thing sunsetting, put it over the top. That's one hell of a 'parting' shot.
