close votes are prime opportunities to wheel and deal.

it's possible mccain got greedy and/or mcturtle was too stubborn.

3. Maybe but I think it was as much about insulting Trump as anything.

He got Trump to say he was a hero and then he jerked the football away a la Lucy and Charlie Brown.

McConnell got smug and happy and didn't twist Collins' or Murkowski's arms like he might have otherwise and then McCain flipped at the last second.

Or not. Who knows?

criticism about being a fake maverick and knuckling under to the GOP party line (which, in truth, he's done quite often). Maybe he wanted to go out with that "maverick" reputation intact, whether or not he really deserves it. That could have been his last chance to vote on major legislation, and maybe he wanted to be remembered for that final grand gesture. Or maybe it was his way to deliver a big Fuck You to Trump, whom he dislikes. He may or may not have had a noble reason for doing it but I'm glad he did it anyhow.

Equal (or more) credit should be given to Murkowski and Collins because they are staying in the Senate and will have to keep taking shit from their male colleagues and threats to their states from Trump's goons. I note that Capito capitulated; maybe she came to Washington to hurt people after all.

7. McCain also made it clear he wanted to use"regular order" for the bill....

which would have meant sending the bill to committee, holding hearings, etc. McConnell chose to ignore that and try to shove something through using the bs "reconciliation process." So McCain burned him. Live by the sword.....

Don't forget, some of the Dems have tough elections coming up in 2018 and MAGAs will be gunning for them.

8. There's also this:

“There is nothing Trump can do any more that will get to McCain. Battling an aggressive form of brain cancer, the maverick was willing to vote ‘no’ on the ‘skinny repeal’ amendment so that other GOP colleagues who were also opposed to the measure could vote ‘yes’ to save face with the conservative base. To this day, Trump has never apologized for saying that the former fighter pilot was not a war hero because he got captured in Vietnam. It gets less attention, but the president also besmirched the Arizona senator’s character by repeatedly accusing him of not taking care of other veterans. McCain has never forgotten.”
