(7,581 posts)Then Pence pardons him.
He will forget, as usual, about NY's Atty General who is also on the hunt, and Pence can't pardon state crimes. And with his corrupt business history, Trump should NEVER HAVE run for any office, at all.

(111,345 posts)at the Correspondents' Dinner roast. I can still remember the look on his face as he stomped out at the end of that thing.
Since Congress has denied him his revenge, there's little point to staying in office. He has no interest in doing the job. He hasn't even bothered to find out what the job is in many cases.
Still, it's even money whether he'll go out kicking and screaming (impeachment) or just do an epic flounce.
I'm going to show you look

(111,345 posts)I remember it from seventh grade, right after I'd whacked him with my metal lunchbox. He didn't show me, he knew I'd hurt him if he tried. Now Donny is finally learning the same lesson, only Obama hasn't had to lift a finger. Or a lunchbox.

I said it...
One of the podcasts talking heads I listen to made the point that he wants us to believe it but there's no real evidence.
Transactional is back and forth or give and take.
He expects tribute. You give and he takes.
You build on his golf course and he doesn't pay you. You are lucky to be associated with his brand and to exist in his radiating aura.
You shouldn't talk about or push back on his ludicrous promise to screw over your people. What matters is that he made that promise and now it's up to you El Presidente to give up something to make it happen.
In any case, it changed my whole outlook on him.

(90,810 posts)VP Spiro Agnew was a provable crook, so they got rid of him first and with Nixon's agreement appointed a member of Congress to fill the VP slot. So we then had President Nixon and VP Gerald Ford. At that point the Watergate trial could proceed.
As far as I can tell, the line of succession seems to apply to a series of deaths.

1 Vice President Mike Pence (R)
2 Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan (R)
3 President pro tempore of the Senate Orrin Hatch (R)
4 Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (R)
5 Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin (R)
6 Secretary of Defense James Mattis (I)
On a better note, I typed into google "Presidential" and the follow up of succession was in the top three suggested choices.
I wonder if that's just my search history or everyone in the world combined.

(6,044 posts)those who might testify against him. We should be discussing how Justice can make the best deal for the people.
We should be strong in demanding justice. The tendency of government is to try to spare the people from going though a long battle.
I think we should be clear that we can take a messy process and don't need to let wrong-doing people in high places off the hook of justice in order to "protect" us.

(2,404 posts)Trump is going down, but who will go with him?
I've said before I think Pence has been instructed to stay quietly in the background, making little to no noise, so that he can be brought forth as the calm, rational innocent who knew nothing and was lied to by all Trump's evil henchmen. But he's in this up to his eyeballs. So who knows how it will play out.

(18,837 posts)He could obviously bail for "health reasons"...some "mystery illness"...but he'd see that as an admission of weakness.
He could see the writing on the wall, realize that if Mueller doesn't have the money laundering facts in his hands right now, he's well on the way to them...but if he resigned, his ego couldn't handle it.
But 17 days is a LONG time to play golf, watch cable news, and gorge himself on McDonald's, well-done steaks with ketchup, Diet Cokes, salad with an extra dish of Thousand Island, potato chips, and chocolate pie with two scoops.
HIS BIG MOMENT...tonight's "announcement" that the Governor of WV is switching parties...is somewhat dwarfed by today's breaking news.
His polling keeps getting worse, the transcripts of his begging the Mexican President to pay for the wall, the "WH is a dump" story confirmed by NINE club employees and members who heard it first hand...The Mooch...Stephen Miller...Huckabee-Sanders confirming that he lied by "doing what any father would do" by "weighing in" on the Don Jr fiasco...SUBPOENAS for Don Jr...
...he's really going to take a 17-day time-out and then jump back into the fire?

(2,850 posts)He wouldn't be able to handle the blow to his ego. I'd be more willing to bet on him pulling some kind of hamfisted maneuver trying (vainly) to get the investigation shut down. Maybe he'll fire Sessions. Maybe he'll try to pull some scam where he preemptively pardons a bunch of people and signs an executive order trying to shut the investigation down. Whatever he tries probably fails anyway though - and gets him in worse trouble. I don't see him stepping down unless he's in an unavoidable checkmate though.
