Dashboard tracking Russian propaganda on Twitter by Clint Watts & Alliance for Securing Democracy

HAMILTON 68
Securing democracy through information

In the Federalist Papers No. 68, Alexander Hamilton wrote of protecting America’s electoral process from foreign meddling.
Today, we face foreign interference of a type Hamilton could scarcely have imagined, a world in which global powers use instantaneous media networks and a mix of overt and covert programming to reach into our homes and workplaces and shape our view of the world.

The Hamilton 68 dashboard, a project with the Alliance for Securing Democracy at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, seeks to expose the effects of online influence networks and inform the public of themes and content being promoted to Americans by foreign powers.

We have spent the last decade watching nefarious actors influence populations toward violence and authoritarianism. The first step in countering these harmful influence efforts is awareness.

The dashboard illustrates the themes that Vladimir Putin is promoting to Americans in pursuit of his foreign policy objectives--including the break up of the European Union, the dissolution of NATO and the failure of democratic governance in the United States specifically and in the West broadly.

Hamilton 68 will pursue the following objectives and support the countries and organizations that share them:
Restore faith in democratic institutions and the elected officials who govern them by challenging foreign attempts to manipulate democratic audiences
Enhance the ability of journalists and their media outlets to identify & refute disinformation and misinformation
Undermine extremists of all stripes who utilize false information and manipulated truths to foment violence along religious, ethnic, economic, social, or political lines.
