The most anticipated celestial event of the year the solar eclipse is here, enchanting millions with midday darkness and leading to traffic jams in many areas of the United States.
As of 6:40 a.m. MDT, traffic in Wyoming was backed up between Cheyenne and Casper as drivers made their way to a region where they will be able to see the total solar eclipse, according to local newspaper the Casper Star Tribune. Roads elsewhere in the state are more congested than usual, too.

Wanted to rent a car but they wanted over $200 for the weekend... for, get this, a Mitsubishi Eclipse. What assholes!

(10,136 posts)It may burn off by totality. Or not. We're not in the totality zone, but I'd like to someday see a partial eclipse: I always seem to draw the adverse weather for them.

Scientists warn me to not stare at sun during #SolarEclipse2017, but these are the SAME people who say Global Warming is real.

(22,239 posts)The eclipse and totality was wonderful, the drive home took me 4 hours to get there and nearly 7 to get home. I did, however, gain a superpower. I gained the ability to keep my bladder from exploding while waiting in traffic for extremely long periods of time.

(814 posts)Vancouver WA to a little town just north of Salem OR, and it took about 2 hours to get back home. We had lunch afterwards to kill a little time and the traffic delays on I5 and 205 were already decreasing 3 hours after totality. I think a lot of people in the region took the day off and stayed home and off the roads.
I thought the buildup to totality - the one hour of the moon blocking the sun - was underwhelming. The effects - cooling down & darkening - were very gradual. I was hoping to see the moon's shadow racing by as totality started, but we were on flat terrain and the shadow moves so fast that it seemed to darken instantaneously. However, the short period of totality was actually more striking than I expected: a huge black flaming orb in the sky! Almost indescribable and unforgettable.
