The temperature dropped, the shadows lengthened, and the chickens started for the coop.

A fun time!

in the 100% zonewhere we joined family to picnic and watch, the changing light was very beautiful. Leaf shapes really did become Crescents.

The sun made me think of what worlds would be like when their suns are much farther away than here. The sun was shining but it was cool. insects started chirping extra loud, but the horses seem to take it normally.

I now think we make too much of staring at the profile of the sun. The sun is the source of all life here on our planet, and this made me realize that the real event is seeing the changes here on earth, even extremely briefly, from a lessening of what the sun is able to give us.

It was all but total, only the tiniest sliver of sunlight left. Everything got very dark, the birds sang their sleepy songs, and the katydids started singing, which usually only occurs after dark. A nice couple from South Africa stopped by to watch it with us. Their GPS had taken them miles and miles off-course and they didn't want to miss it entirely. It was spectacular and we all enjoyed it very much. What I found interesting was that you could watch the progress of the thing in the dappled light and shadow under the trees. They became smaller and smaller crescents, too.
