Remember: only 99% of scientists say it's a problem to stare directly into the eclipse

During an eclipse how do you show you're an idiot and set a terrible example of how to act?

Remember: only 99% of scientists say it's a problem to stare directly into the eclipse. So it's an open debate.

protective light shield. Experts predict that it will require another 100 years to increase scientific opinion to 99.9%, which is thought to be an insufficient number to generate political consensus for action to protect the public.

In another thread I asked if anyone know how long you could look at the sun without damage. I think we all have "peeked" at the sun. Trump probably looked for less than a second. From a public health standpoint, it's way better to say "don't look," than "don't look more than a second or so." But now Trump will have "evidence" that science is not to be trusted.

We should be free to let our children learn both sides of looking directly into the sun for extended periods of time.

Curiosity... cats and all that...

Just wondered what it looked like with plain vision. I never glanced for more than half a second or so and I'm just fine. I'm sure Trump will be fine too. I don't see the big deal, really. It can't be any worse than looking into the sun on a normal day and if you're dumb enough to stare into the sun LONG ENOUGH to damage your eyes on any days... then there's no fixing stupid.

The sun is no hotter or brighter during an eclipse. The danger is being lulled into staring at it because you are not seeing the full glare. A quick glance is no more or less harmful than a quick glance when you are driving or at the beach.
