Send more troops to Afghanistan, Trump tells Nato

May under pressure to support plan with more British forces

President Trump pressured Britain and other Nato members to send more troops to Afghanistan last night as he outlined a new strategy for America’s longest war.

Nearly 600 British troops are based in Afghanistan, where vital parts of the country have fallen back under the control or influence of the Taliban.

“We will ask our Nato allies and global partners to support our new strategy, with additional troop and funding increases in line with our own,” Mr Trump said. “We are confident they will.”

Mr Trump is now poised to become the third US commander-in-chief to send troops to Afghanistan. He gave the Pentagon permission earlier this year to send a further 3,900 troops into the 16-year conflict.

I have had the same answer cross my mind frequently.

With Trump, there will probably be more civilian casualties than Taliban.
