Pima County Supervisor Ally Miller refused to attend Mondays Board of Supervisors meeting in Arizona after she was caught declaring her white pride on Facebook after the Charlottesville, Virginia violence.
Miller sent an email to county officials at 6:13 a.m. saying that she would be unable to attend the meeting, but didnt give a reason, the Arizona Daily Star reported.
I am sending this to notify you that I will be unable to cal [sic] in to todays board meeting: August 21, 2017, Miller wrote in an email. Please notify the Chair.
A large number of people spoke out against Millers comments at the meeting, which included hecklers from both supporters and opponents of Miller.
Im sick and tired of being hit for being white, she wrote on Facebook hours after the Charlottesville violence. It is all about making us feel like we need to apologize. I am WHITE and proud of it! No apologies necessary.

(1,301 posts)I feel like I need to act. Act in supporting those who support equality. Act in supporting those who understand oppression in this country is systemic at the government level. And on and on and on.
If you feel you need to apologize, maybe it's because you feel guilty for your own actions.

(23,987 posts)...genetic gifts I was lucky enough to have bestowed upon me by the total accident of the timing of my conception. Good timing, Mom and Dad! A few minutes earlier or later, and I would have been someone else.
I am grateful for all of those gifts that have made my life easier - I am reasonably pleasing to look at (so I'm told), have had good heath, and have a decent IQ, which allowed me to have choices in my career. Having "white" skin has definitely made my life easier because we live in a society where pale pink skin has been regarded without suspicion, and has opened doors that might otherwise have been slammed in my face.
So, grateful - absolutely. Proud - no.

I'm sometimes ashamed, not of being white, but of some of the other white people out there who do things that make all of us look bad.

(146,308 posts)None of us had a thing to do with that. Being white is simply an accident of conception. None of us choose our own parents, so where does this "pride" come from.
I'm proud of some of the decisions I have made and actions I have taken, and less proud of some others. But the color of my skin is not a source of pride for me, since I had nothing to do with that. Neither does anyone else have anything to do with the color of their skin.
It is a false pride from the very start.
