According to John Branch of the New York Times, Cunningham said the following about his decision to walk away: "I take full ownership of my alignment with the sport. I can just no longer be in that cheerleader's spot."
He also discussed the role concussions played in his unprecedented move: "In its current state, there are some real dangersbroken limbs, wear and tear. But the real crux of this is that I just don't think the game is safe for the brain. To me, it's unacceptable."

Cunningham is right. Many are willing to take the risk simply because of the $$. Those that don't make it to the NFL..the injuries and damage aren't worth 4 years of college ball. Even making it to the NFL, is more costly than people imagine. But it is still all about $$...............Question, Has any announcer for football, college or pro ever resigned and made a statement like this?...I don't recall, but I really don't follow football much.

We're about to hit critical mass on having a national conversation about this.

(825 posts)1. I read an article on this several years ago
Have not watched a game since. It just makes me too sad.
I live in a BIG college football town and it seems everyone here is an obsessed fan.

Occasionally at a family get together there is a game on. (maybe once or twice a year) That is all. Football as a sport can destroy any part of the body, and often does.

(16,646 posts)4. Not really
There have been variations on a theme from former players. Some have retired "early". Some have claimed that their kids won't be allowed to play. That kind of thing.

I'd say in the next five years.
