(115,900 posts)In fact, its policies are among the most liberal of the mainstream Protestant churches, which is why it was somewhat surprising that some members of this congregation had problems with the pastor. However, it's in North Carolina so the members may be more conservative than those in many other churches around the US. But the UCC is very definitely not "evangelical" or in any way fundamentalist. I grew up in that church (formerly the Congregational Church) and found it to be thoroughly non-ideological and utterly devoid of the slightest hints of hellfire and damnation. I'm no longer a member of that or any other church but it's not accurate to describe it as among the conservative right-wing faux-Christian denominations. They tend, instead, to be activists for social justice, which seems to be what this pastor was trying to do. Unfortunately he found himself in some backwater church that hadn't got with the program, which is this: http://www.ucc.org/justice_issues

I, too, grew up in a UCC environment.

(100,108 posts)They really are the most miserable, hateful, self-loathing group of people on the planet. And they have to find some way to inflict their hatred and self-loathing on others. They try to please a hateful, spiteful god that will never be pleased. They will never be happy as long as they live because of that. I mean what will it take for them to wake the fuck up and realize that they've been lied to? Ever?
