Questions are always coming up that need answers. When you had a question about some prominent person or thing, you used to have to ask your friends if they knew anything about it. If no friends were handy, you could even ask people on Internet websites if they had any information that would help you get the answer.
Now, however, a revolutionary new website lets you ask your question by typing just a few keywords. Then, that website will search the entire Internet to find answers to almost any question and let you get additional information just by clicking on links. It works, apparently, in just seconds.
This remarkable discovery is called Google, and it's revolutionizing the way people get and explore information. Want to try it? Just click the link below and discover its amazing power:

(13,783 posts)...the questions they might otherwise ask DUers? I'm not sure why, but I like getting answers to some questions from people talking directly to me, although, of course, I use Google a lot. As does every single DUer, I'm sure. So, again, what's this about?

No, Nixon did not pardon McCain for acts of treason --- yes there recently was a meme going around about that.
And heaven forbid you cite Snopes.

(16,423 posts)You can simply block Google from finding your website by configuring the robot.txt file of your website to deny permission to the Google-bot to report your website back to the search-engine.
What do you think why you cannot find certain corporate web-pages via Google?
Or stuff like the Deep Web /Dark Web???????????????????????????

(146,338 posts)most information of interest to people. I understand that most web designers try really, really hard to get Google's attention and get ranked high in its results, though. I think most websites want Google to find them, for some unknown reason.

(21,597 posts)Information specialists know much of our information is blocked behind paywalls and in private archives. It is a huge mistake to only do research through general search engines. For basic questions, yes, but full research requires access to research resources often accessed through libraries. I often do business research and some of the best business research is through investment firms with access only to investors or by knowing someone who will share with you.
Drives me crazy when any of us implies a simple google search leads to all the answers. It's a great tool and first step. I still rely on asking others for information the old fashioned ways. I often get much better information much faster!!!
MineralMan
(146,338 posts)That's what I've noticed, anyhow. I also understand that a person can sometimes get past paywalls by doing some specific Google searches that are of help with that. Now, I would never do anything like that, of course, but I understand that it's sometimes possible.

The doctor blinked. 'Why?'
'Dammit, I asked you. If you won't tell me, I'd rather beat it out of you than look it up.'
What book is that from?
How much work does it take for you to find out?
Does somebody reading this (besides me) know the answer without looking it up?

(37,573 posts)When I google the last line I get
1. all the lyrics to Kendrick Lamar's Damn/ real 92.3
2. Kendrick Lamar's love
3. mommie dearest - wikiquote
4. a series of images
and only then Lightning
Of course, I had to get the quote wrong in order to make it at least a little harder to find.
With google sometimes you have to wade through a lot of crap you didn't want or refine your search a number of times and still cam come up empty.
For example, you can find a lot of obituaries online for people who died after 2005. But sometimes you cannot find an obituary for somebody who died last month. Google cannot find everything. and it can be even tougher if you are not sure if the person is living or dead.
On FB for example, people have posted lists of missing classmates that they would like to contact about reunions. Because I have a lot of experience doing that type of searching I can perhaps find death records easier than somebody else who was told to "just google it yourself".

(10,749 posts)Season 4, episode 1. Computer programmers had to search for a name beginning with As and living in a particular town. It took all night. One of the programmers had a pet mouse on his shoulder. And earlier in the episode they portrayed a chess match between a Russian chess player and this 1967 computer. The computer took about 40 minutes to make a move, but it won.
