This morning I woke up to a track update that Hurricane Irma is now projected to hit the west coast of Florida, and Miami is nearly in the clear. I am in favor of giving people all the information they need to stay safe. I also agree with mandatory evacuations. But I also think of the expense in cost and anxiety, especially when it turns out to be a false alarm. One sad thing about human behavior is that people on the East coast who evacuated, might think twice the next time government officials demand action from them.
Which is why the only lesson here is that we need to increase the funds to our weather prediction organizations. Republicans be damned. Not sure why Europe has taken the lead on this matter, except because Republicans are drowning us in a bathtub.

(46,756 posts)the update I found on my mobile feed shows the hurricane path going over the keys (which is west of Miami) and swinging up the west coast. Miami wasn't even marked on the hurricane path. I am sure they are going to see surges, but it won't be a direct hit.

(7,107 posts)The storm is huge but the most dangerous area is near the eye. Even then its the NE section near the eye were the strongest winds are.
The radar image will show Irma covering the state, but the biggest risk is the eye and out 50 miles.
