Reed Timmer just did a report, showing hundreds of cars, trucks, some with boats behind them, lining both sides of the highway leading towards/from Key West.
I can't figure out why so many people would simultaneously leave them there.
Anyone?

(111,277 posts)When there's a 99% chance it will be ruined by flooding in the driveway, it makes sense to park it up higher.
It probably won't work, but there ya go.

(22,990 posts)I used to live in a very wooded neighborhood where most residents would move their vehicles up close to the main road, knowing that a dozen downed trees would be blocking their path to ... wherever, after the storm. But that has nothing to do with garages.

(2,857 posts)They stupidly decided to stay because they were afraid of getting stuck on the road. This makes me wonder if they heard of abandoned cars and thought they were in the road

(36,444 posts)They are parking them on high ground. High ground is subjective, but typically, high ground in the keys is where a tree pushes up the sidewalk.

(3,266 posts)"all parked on the limited high ground" - so they must be hoping to save a car at least.

(60,010 posts)Ok..I get that....we use the shopping center parking lot, which is safe from falling trees, poles, etc and if you get behind one of the big stores and the grassy bank, safe from prevailing winds. So people park there if they can do so, then come back in a day or so for their car.
but I have never seen that many cars as in the clip.
Hope it works out for them...

(14,858 posts)Maybe they're trying to prevent the cars and boats from being destroyed by flooding. The boats won't make it, boats are pretty light weight and easy for the wind to blow around.

(34,136 posts)So with the storm surge, the vehicles would be flooded and a total loss. I guess parking them on the roadways would give a better chance of them having something to drive after the storm is over. Even if they were hit with flying debris, a dented car or one missing a few windows would be better than an inundated one.

(3,764 posts)that many of the boats will be blown into the cars, destroying both of them.

(15,805 posts)it was higher ground and the owners hoped that was enough to save them. They showed a jeep with the winch fastened to the guardrail.

People have been doing it ever since Georges' surge took so many of our cars,
