Black Girls Are 7 Times More Likely To Be Suspended Than White Girls: Report

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/black-girls-7-times-more-likely-suspended_us_59b69232e4b0354e44134c6d?ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009

A new report is further confirming the racial biases black girls face in school when it comes to being disciplined.

The National Black Women’s Justice Institute recently examined the Education Department’s data from the 2013-2014 school year, which was released in June 2016, and found that nationally, black girls were more than seven times more likely than white girls to receive an out-of-school suspension.

Though black girls made up only 16 percent of the female student population, 28 percent of them were physically restrained, 43 percent were referred to law enforcement (2.5 times more likely than white girls) and 38 percent were arrested (four times more likely than white girls). Latina elementary students were nearly three times more likely to be arrested than non-Latina white girls.

The social justice nonprofit also looked at these trends regionally. In the South and the West, black girls were five times more likely to face suspension than white girls; in the northeast, black girls were six times more likely to face suspension; and in the Midwest, black girls were 10 times more likely.

White privilege to me in part means this, the ability to make stupid mistakes and usually not suffer life altering consequences for them.

When you look at how school and law enforcement treats minorities it becomes evident that young black boys and girls do not get chances to make mistakes. They are almost always dealt with much more harshly. When I look back on my own youth I can't help but wonder how I may have been expelled from school and/or jailed if I had been a black boy instead of a white one. It's part of the latent racism that can be enforced without technically "violating" the rules.

A black parent will likely hear this, "Well Mrs. Smith, your child broke the rules, the rules are clear, we have no choice but to suspend them." Where as a white parent will likely hear this, "Well Mrs. Smith, technically your child broke the rules and we are within our rights to suspend them, but we won't be doing that as long as you child can show that this is not a pattern..."

And the answer isn't that more white kids should get suspended, the answer should be that more black kids are given leniency and misdeeds are more often used as learning opportunities.

When I look back at my life, I was given a break by authorities so many times I can't count.

instead student in trouble should be getting the attention of social service workers.
what would happen if in school suspensions were group therapy sessions instead of glorified baby sitting?

but yeah, the racial bias is a fucking crime. schools should be lifting students up, not tearing them apart.

while ignoring 2 white students w/ untucked shirts strolling by was the straw that pushed me into going to boarding school (a public magnet school focused on math and science). I was leaning towards it beforehand just because it was a better educational opportunity, but moving 3 hours away from my parents and leaving behind my friends kept staying at my home school a viable option.

What % of each race in what areas of the country? What were the reasons given or offense? What was the race of each administrator who expelled each girl? What was the socio-economic situation for each girl? (Is it possible that most of the poorer girls were minorities, and more girls who are poor are expelled...therefore, they would be minorities?)

These sorts of things that give one piece of raw data don't tell the whole story. More information is needed before a conclusion can be drawn. Maybe the initial impression is correct. Maybe it isn't.

Here's an example of such a piece of raw data: More men arrested in NYC are Af. American as opposed to white. Some people have concluded that means the police are discriminating against Af Americans (white privilege). But Bloomberg explained it: There is higher crime in some neighborhoods that are predominantly Af. American areas; there have been complaints by the citizens in those areas in years past that the police didn't cover those areas enough to make them safer. So in recent years, NYC has done that: worked the high crime areas more. Since the areas are predominantly Af. American, there would be a higher percentage of them being arrested. So more complete facts sometimes fill in the picture.

Christian maybe but that is probably because Christians are the majority religion. If I was uncomfortable I wouldn't reply to, in fact I'm very comfortable because I know it is bullshit to say one race is 7x more likely to engage in disruptive behavior while ignoring racial biases like that couldn't be the problem. I've known black, white, or otherwise to engage in corporal punishment. My dad hit me upside the head several times and my fundamentalist (The Door Church) uncle used to spank me to the point I had bruises he made a point to do that which angered my mom.

generalizations there. Please read your post again and notice that.

It's valid, IMO, to state that some study shows that a % of Af American girls do such and such, while a % of Asian or white girls do such and such. But to state that "black children are more likely to escalate the situation" is a statement that is opinion and not based on facts.

You have several such statements in your post. You may not realize it. I do posts sometimes, then when I read them later, I see that they read a lot different than what I thought I had said.

(BTW...I'm white, from a middle-middle class home, and was beaten on occasion. Opposite of what you describe, I learned not to challenge authority much. I was never suspended or kicked out of school.)

Teach them early that they're bad and that they need to be forcibly controlled, before they get the insane idea that they deserve to be respected like the human beings they are.
