Every time Cupertino farts the GD page fills up with posts about how much Apple sucks and how much everybody loves their [Linux, Samsung, HTC, flip phone, Atari, Jitterbug] device, and how Apple has destroyed the entire world.
Fercrissake, if you don't like the new iPhone (or simply are envious or cannot afford it), just don't buy it. I'd still love a new Tesla, but just because I cannot afford one doesn't mean Tesla sucks. Get real people. An orange shitgibbon is destroying our country, and we're on DU whining about another Apple product. Sheesh.
Besides wanting more Apple products I would like a Tesla , and it can be used , that's fine doesn't have to be new as long as it's in good shape. Looking forward to it all...

(667 posts)I want one new or used after reading this article:
http://www.sacbee.com/news/nation-world/article172345607.html
The article explains how the company remotly boosted the battery capacity. I thought to my self, Ok, so they did a good thing, then I thought, why did they not just sell them that way in the first place. Oh yeah, cause they charge 5 grand more for the other model with full capacity utilization. Sweet

(6,238 posts)The S8 sold very well and I note that Apple is copying its design. Andy Rubin's Essential caused quite a stir. I don't hate Apple or anything. Hell, I have an iPhone 6s and the new iPad. I just find the price point too high and the marketing annoying.

(6,238 posts)I don't see Apple adding a headphone jack in. They want people to go to bluetooth speakers. Personally, I don't care for wireless stuff in general. I've had too many issues with wireless controllers and keyboards over the years.

(31,464 posts)Let me check on the number of times the headphone jack issue has affected me since I bought my iPhone 7 over a year ago...lets see...exactly zero. I lost the dongle within a month, and it's never been an issue. Certainly not going to worry about changing all my apps and info just because the new iPhone doesn't have an 8mm headphone jack.

(36,827 posts)My buggy is hitched to Apple's cart because my aviation app doesn't work on Android. I still have my 6, but the lack of a dedicated headphone jack just isn't that big of a deal. There's also a few reasons to favor Apple over Android.

....well, I don't have that one anymore. I eventually went to android when it started to die. Even then I bought an older cheaper one and I go the prepay route.
Everyone around me had either android or apple and couldn't understand why I went with Windows at the time....it was real simple:
1. It was $20.
2. Made calls, texts and it had apps, granted, based on Microsoft.
3. It was $20.
4. It hooked up to my lap top and photos were immediately uploaded to a cloud.
5. Did I mention it was $20?

(11,742 posts)I used to play sports. I was loyal to my teams. I grew up a Dodger fan, and still have preference, but I never understood the whole idea of being driven to upset and even violence about a team or a product.
I prefer Android phones and Windows computers. I like AMD chips over Intel but I can acknowledge readily that Apple and Linux systems have distinct advantages over Windows, that Intel makes some really good chips. I have an iPhone for work and it is a decent piece of equipment. Would I buy one? No. Would I throw it in the trash if I got a free one? No chance.
I would also never get into a fight over a baseball/basketball/football/futbol or any other team.

I think that some of you are well aware that the discussions about chicken are not about chicken at all. The purpose of these threads is to dig up an old flame war and wave it in the faces of certain people, because you want to get under their skin. To their credit, those people have not taken the bait. But we really think that a dozen threads on a topic specifically intended to bait people is really enough.
But now we are in a completely idiotic death-spiral of enforcement and boundaries-testing. The mods lock a thread, and then three spring up. And so the purpose of starting threads about chicken is no longer about tweaking a few of your fellow DUers, it's now about tweaking the moderators.
And then I get incredulous emails from people who are shocked, shocked that discussion of chicken -- chicken fercryinoutloud -- is not allowed. As if the discussion of chicken is something that is vitally important and that everyone is really interested in.
So please, if you really need to discuss chicken, do it in one of the threads that is already open on the subject. But please stop posting new threads about chicken or turkey or whatever. I know it's really fun to tweak people, especially when those people are the moderators, but I think it's time to find to something else fun to do.

Quoting for posterity "Fercrissake, if you don't like the new iPhone (or simply are envious or cannot afford it), just don't buy it. I'd still love a new Tesla, but just because I cannot afford one doesn't mean Tesla sucks."
So, god forbid, we discuss positives and negatives of the various aspects of an iPhone?
Need a safe space?
I don't buy Apple products for the same reason I don't buy Sony products: if you design your device to use non-standard shit SIMPLY so you can make extra money selling wires and accessories at huge markups, I'm not going to play along. Especially when you CHANGE the non-standard shit you use every few years just for shits and giggles.
I put an aftermarket car stereo in my old car; it came with an original-style 30-pin iPhone/iPod cable so you could plug your device into your car stereo easily. It was a few years old but worked well enough and was much better than the stock Chrysler unit. Fair enough; it also came with a standardized 3.5mm audio input for "everything else".
So I go to plug in my iPod Nano, and found out to my unpleasant surprise that Apple had decided to rearrange the wiring of the 30-pin connector a little. So my iPod Nano could connect to the stereo, and I got sound, and the display showed what was playing, and I could pause and skip and so on, but the little wiring change that Apple made MEANT THE DAMN IPOD WOULDN'T CHARGE.
It THOUGHT it was charging, because when it was plugged in the screen lit up full-time. But it wasn't, and the always-on screen killed it relatively quickly as a result, rendering it useless for its intended purpose.
For everyday use, I wore a pair of earbuds. For long trips, I plugged the 30-pin cable into a USB charger in the car's power port, and plugged the 3.5mm aux cable into the stereo. A patch of velcro kept the iPod within finger-poking distance.
And when I got a smartphone a few years later (2012, I think), it wasn't an Apple product because I wasn't going to be dealing with this shit again. It uses an industry-standard micro-USB cable and can take an industry standard micro-SD memory card that I can easily and readily access. It's not about cost; free iPhone offers abound. But there's only so much inherent stupidity I can take.
Apple makes a shit-ton of money, so obviously a lot of people don't care about what I care about. That's all well and good. Works for me and works for them. But lose the "sore winner" attitude; it's not becoming from the Fanta Menace, and it's not becoming from Apple users either.

My kids learned to read with them, and my oldest son is now a developer, and my younger son is a brilliant designer/animator working in tv and film. Our house is all-in with Apple. Apple TV, a couple of Macs, iPhones, Airport for beaming content (tv, movies, music) around the house to tv and speakers. They all sync up beautifully. I wouldn't trade this set-up for anything. (16,245 posts)Which is surely going to kill us all faster than Trump will. Not to mention their labor practices around the world (though this is not unique to Apple).
I despise people drooling over the latest gadget. It is shallow and selfish and ruining the planet.
And fuck Silicon Valley and tech bros in general. They are bad for politics, bad for labor, bad for anyone who isn't a tech bro (or sis, I guess). Ask anyone who used to be able to afford to live in San Francisco. Maybe Tim Cook is a Democrat or a liberal, but all of those companies are all about liberal values, except when it comes to regulations and, of course, paying their rightful share of taxes. The Democratic Party should not be down with that.
Two of them just made an app to replace bodegas and corner stores. Fuck that disruptive shit.

Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)The reason mom and pop stores are becoming obsolete in the larger sense is because larger operations will always beat them in productivity. Personally I don't really understand the argument for mom and pop operations. While in some cases they may benefit mom and pop, those working for them are generally on the same shit end of the stick as those who work for large corporations, and arguably more so since they often lack the regulatory protections afforded to employees of larger organizations.
Rather that trying to turn back the clock and pretend all of our gains in productivity do not exist, a better approach is figuring out a way to share those gains in productivity with everyone and not just those who happen to own the means of production and the financiers in hopes that maybe the rest of us will get trickled on.
alarimer
(16,245 posts)With big box stores, you may gain in efficiency and price but every place looks just like every other place. It makes ever suburb a soulless, empty place, boring place. Productivity is not everything. Character is. Community is. Those place, in many cases, are fixtures of the communities. They may know their customers' names or their families. That MATTERS. When you are just a number, you stop caring about anyone else as well.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)As far as abstract notions of character, this is purely a zoning issue. My town has strict zoning requirements that are based on specific areas. Even the big box stores must comply which means they must design their storefronts to match the character of the area.
snooper2
(30,151 posts)alarimer
(16,245 posts)It is soulless, corporate, consumerist SHIT. And not incidentally, this sort of things gives rise to the every growing divide among people. Once we stop interacting, at stores, in neighborhood cafes, wherever, we stop caring about people and it all becomes about ME and what I want and when I want it.
The self-centeredness of our society is why we are in the state we are in today.
