3. The main issues are CLEARLY due to Republican obstruction....

"A similar failure to progress has also afflicted the nation’s social agenda. In areas such as public education, health and wellness, personal safety, water and sanitation, environmental quality, and tolerance and inclusion, among others, U.S. progress has stalled or gone in reverse. In these areas, where America was often a pioneer and leader, the U.S. has fallen well down the list compared to other advanced countries. Tolerance, inclusion, and personal freedom are registering troubling declines, a sign of growing divisions in our society."

REPUBLICANS are gutting public education
REPUBLICANS are determined to take HEALTH CARE away from virtually everyone but the wealthy
REPUBLICANS are trashing the clean water & air laws
REPUBLICANS are denying climate change
REPUBLICANS are oppressing, harassing and denying equal opportunity & human rights to PoC and women

ALL. REPUBLICANS.

This report is about politics, but it is not political. The problem is not Democrats or Republicans or the existence of parties per se. The problem is not individual politicians; most who seek and hold public of ce are genuinely seeking to make a positive contribution. The real problem is the nature of competition in the politics industry.

9. I dislike that they call it an "industry". Like health care, if it is, it shouldn't be.

And it still stands that it's REPUBLICANS who want to destroy social safety nets, public health and education, human and equal rights, and the environment, all in favor of more corporate profit (it's at record high levels now, while they taxes they pay are at record lows) & special treatment for billionaires. Looking at one of the charts in the PDF, it was primarily Democrats who voted for Soc Security and Medicare and the ACA. Republicans never supported it and they never will.

Is that a problem with the "industry" or with Republicans? I think the latter.

The document also decries the lack of any accomplishment from the Simpson-Bowles Commission. I did not WANT that commission to accomplish anything because part of its plan was to cut Social Security, which is absurd and unnecessary. Mr. " Social Security Is Like a "Milk Cow with 310 Million Tits!" who called today's retirees "The Greediest Generation" (he must be projecting) is at it again now, too.

Harvard is above all a Business School - I have to remember that.

The authors point to a number of American pathologies that do not plague other advanced nations.

The saddest part is that most right wingers have no clue that the country is in such a state of disrepair and crisis. They have been weaned on 40 years of the idea that politics is a zero-sum game and the act of "winning" is simply achieved by not allowing the opposition to have anything they want, ever.

They are willing to kill the goose to prevent anyone from getting the golden eggs. Pathetic does not begin to adequately describe them...

Our recommended strategy addresses the following four pillars:
• Restructure the election process
• Restructure the governing process
• Reform money in politics
• Open up near-term competition, without waiting for structural reform

Establish nonpartisan top-four primaries.

Institute ranked-choice voting with instant runoff in general elections

Institute nonpartisan redistricting.

Eliminate partisan control of House and Senate rules and processes.
