Republicans and Rock 'n' Roll - they just don't get it.

So Romney's campaign made yet another miscalculation in trying to use part of Al Green song

This is a great synopsis of the over-reach of Republicans when it comes to songs

Reagan picked a Springsteen song?!?!?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_in_the_U.S.A._(song)

Bob Dole tried to use "I'm a DOLE man".
Moore continued to tour through the 1990s. He released "I'm a Dole Man" in 1996, with the "Soul Man" lyrics rewritten, for Presidential candidate Bob Dole to play at voter rallies. The owners of "Soul Man"'s publishing rights did not agree with the claim that it was fair use of the song as a parody, and forced the campaign to stop using it.

Michelle Bachmann tried to use "An American Girl" (it is about a suicide) and Petty asked her to stop using it.

"I Won't Back Down" has been used by a variety of politicians. It drew a “cease and desist” letter when Bush used it in 2000.

Sarah Palin used "Barracuda" by Heart ---as with anything Palin related it was a miserable miscalculation and failure.
"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

and McCain with Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty". First do you want people to think that you are RUNNING ON EMPTY!?!?!. Second Jackson Browne unrelently sued McCain's campaign.

They think if it has been published, it is free for all to use as they want.

The rich are always too fucking cheap to pay for this type of stuff.

Fortunate Son
Recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Written by John Fogerty

Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! More! More! yoh

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no

That's even more clueless than Reagan using "Born in the USA".

Either he's an arrogant idiot, with other arrogant idiots for advisers, or he is one cynical mofo who thinks his followers are idiots.

AND Junior used "Still the One"

In 2004, the Bush campaign played the song at campaign events until Orleans co-founder (and future Democratic congressman and Bush critic) John Hall commented publicly that the campaign had never received permission to use the song. The campaign later dropped the song from its playlist. Hall expressed similar criticisms when John McCain used the song in his 2008 presidential campaign.[4]

The song was played for senator Ted Kennedy when he made a surprise appearance at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
(no one complained then!!)

Shut up! And take your dissonances like a man.

Granted, the misogyny, Ives was not trying to demean women, but to demean the guy next to him in the audience at Boston Symphony Hall for a Bartok performance. After all, this was the early 20th century.

I am not a musician, but I love music. Whether it be Scarlatti, Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Wagner, Bartok, Ives, Puccini, Schoenberg, Vaughan Williams, Glass, etc.

I adhere to the Ellington Principle, named after "Duke" Ellington. If the music sounds good, it is good.

That's the measure, and it's personal.

one of the two Houston classic rock stations has Walton and Johnson for it's morning show. If you know who Walton and Johnson are, you know what I mean. Their brand of republican bullshit has no place on a rock station.
