I saw this video--on a show last evening--the focus I think was just on what trump was doing yesterday. Anyway, I noticed the handshake-did a double take, just thought it was strange. Now I ran across an article on the clip.
The US First Lady introduces her husband on stage at an event at Joint Base Andrews. He thanks her with a handshake.

Donald Trump doesnt appear to recognize Melania when he sees her

Over the past months, Donald Trumps words and behavior have suggested that hes suffering from worsening cognitive failures. He cant complete a coherent sentence. He gets confused and wanders off repeatedly. Even his friends have begun publicly pushing conspiracy theories to try to explain away his deteriorating condition. Now it appears Trump may have even forgotten who Melania is. No, seriously.
Melania Trump introduced Donald Trump during a public event today, while he was standing about six feet from her. He then walked over to her and extended his hand for a handshake, which is not how anyone ever greets their spouse. She momentarily appeared to be taken aback by the fact that her husband was trying to shake her hand instead of embracing her. Watch the video of the bizarre incident below (link):
Some will suggest that perhaps their marriage is in such bad shape, theyre no longer even willing to share something as intimate as a hug. But that notion would seem to be nullified by Melanias confusion when Donald tried to shake her hand; she was clearly expecting a different kind of embrace. Moreover, even when public figures are struggling in their marriages, they tend to have the sense to fake it in public. Instead, this simply came across as Donald Trump forgetting that Melania was his wife, and reaching out shake her hand as if she were any other staffer introducing him. This fits into a larger recent pattern...................................................

But having those two events occur together, i.e., going directly from Obama to Trump, is basically end of days bad!

(41,991 posts)I think when he's nervous or has no idea what he's doing he dissociates. His mind divides into the automatic response part, which handles thing automatically, and the fantasizing, ruminating part, which is where most of the juice of ones actual self is. It's like driving a car and wondering why you don't actually recall much of the last few minutes, even though you drove perfectly safely under the guidance of the automatic part of you.
I think you can see him move in and out of that dissociated state in his speeches. It's the difference between the prewritten, approved zombie he-must-be-drugged performances and the bile and spit ones, which reflect his real interests and his sense of connection to what he's saying. You can literally see him come and go (so true...so true...) when something in the zombie speeches intersects with what he really connects to.
And yes, it's a real problem. Personally, not professionally, I don't think he understands half of what's going on unless it connects with his few core complaints, i.e. What a great job creator he is, how terrific he is, how he must be protected from anyone who doesn't think he's great, how unfair and dishonest anyone who doesn't think he's great is, etc. You can see him zone out when others are talking about any but a small range of thing. He nods and mouths "thank you" and other non-sequitors which are what one does to look like they're there.
Zombie President is not someone I want making decisions.

(63,221 posts)Something is very off there. Of course, if I were her, I wouldn't want anything more intimate than a handshake either.
