https://www.inverse.com/article/36115-scientists-hearing-voices-schizophrenics-tms?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=ScienceDump&utm_campaign=influencerA new study has shown that for patients with schizophrenia, stimulating a specific area of the brain with magnetic pulses can decrease their likelihood of hearing voices.
The early clinical findings will be presented on Tuesday at the ECNP Congress in Paris, Europes premier scientific meeting for disease-oriented brain research.
A French research group targeted the brains left temporal cortex, an area that they precisely identified as being involved in the experience of hearing voices. The exact area the projection of the ascending branch of the left lateral sulcus that crosses the left superior temporal sulcus is a part of the brain thats associated with language. Using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) a process that involves zapping specific areas of the brain with electromagnetic pulses researchers gave 26 patients a series of 20 Hz high-frequency pulses over 2 sessions a day for 2 days. They also administered a sham treatment to 33 other patients with schizophrenia, and then compared the outcomes.
When patients were re-evaluated two weeks later, researchers discovered that 34.6 percent of the patients treated with TMS had seen more than a 30 percent decrease in their auditory hallucinations a significant response, according to a standard reference known as the Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale.
A magnetic stimulation is applied via the blue device onto a localized brain area in real time,.

Hopefully this leads to some help for Schizophrenics. It must be terrifying to suddenly hear voices in your head.

I've had both experiences.
So glad I grew out of it but I miss the intensity in a strange way.

(7,911 posts)Always ridiculous things, too. One time it was two old ladies arguing about how much oregano to put in the spaghetti sauce. As a kid I thought I was eavesdropping on other people's thoughts. Happily, it stopped a little while after puberty.

(6,401 posts)People with BPD, they discovered the section of the brain that regulates emotion, simply doesn't work. However, they still don't know if its a cause or symptom. But hopefully, now knowing this, they are developing medication or techniques for this.
They also have discovered Depression is not as straight forward as they thought and their may not be just different stages, but different types, making the options to treat even more complex.
But hey, lets move money into treating "Low T", more boner pills, etc.
