He was discovered to have a brain tumor. They would not definitively tie that to being the cause of his actions, but it was strongly suspected.

He was clinically and chronically depressed from gambling which strongly manifests itself during rock bottom periods. There is a strong link between gambling and depression. In addition many mass killers were chronically depressed.

But they didn't know if they were wins or losses. His brother said he got a text from Paddock that he won $250K. Knowing gamblers will gamble until they lose everything, my guess is, he did. He may have been a multimillionaire on paper, but had blown all his cash. He may have been up to his eyeballs in debt too. You can be a multimillionaire and still be bankrupt. Just ask Donald Trump. Perhaps he blamed Las Vegas for his catastrophic losses and this was his way of getting back at them. Create enough havoc that it costs them business.

But I also hope they do a thourough autopsy of his brain. The Texas Tower Shooter, Charles Whitman, also "just snapped". He knew something was wrong with him and tried to get help. In his suicide note, he asked that they examine his brain. Sure enough, he had a pecan sized tumor which could have contributed to his inability to control his violent impulses.
