NRA goes dark after Vegas massacre

NRA goes dark after Vegas massacre
The gun rights group follows its familiar public relations playbook, staying quiet as Democrats blame it for another horrific mass shooting.
By JOSH MEYER 10/02/2017 10:11 PM EDT Updated 10/03/2017 01:21 AM EDT

Democrats lashed out at the National Rifle Association after the worst mass shooting in American history on Monday, but instead of fighting back the gun rights group retreated to a familiar posture: silence.

The NRA’s website, Twitter feed and Facebook page — all of which are typically updated frequently throughout the day —went dark on Monday, posting no new content, and the group did not respond to several calls and emails seeking comment.

“The basic NRA response to high-profile mass shootings is to go dark, say nothing for as long as possible” said Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center, a gun control group. Sugarmann added that the gun owners' group would likely swing back at critics who call for changes to gun laws by saying they are politicizing a tragedy.

Then it's back to all carnage all the time. Right now the NRA's puppets in Congress are carrying their water (Sen. Thune, come on down!), but they'll be back soon enough to explain why everyone totally needs automatic weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

A .308 Winchester caliber rifle such as was used in this Vegas shooting, cannot be silenced. Silencers attached to the end of gun barrels only work on low velocity guns where the bullet is moving at much much lower speeds. Such as low power hand guns, and the very few low power rifles. The silencer issue has absolutely nothing to do with this shooting.

Intelligent criticisms of gun laws help with credibility of the proposals. And keep the critic, whoever it is, from being considered ignorant of the matter under discussion.

A killer with silenced low velocity guns will be able to up the body count greatly in the next mass killing.

invented a silencer for weapons used in this Vegas shooting. I wouldn't doubt that someone in the Repug Party has an interest in such an invention and stands to make a lot of money once a silencer law is passed.
