HBOs CEO finally admits they screwed up on Confederate series but still wont cancel it

In July, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss announced plans for a new HBO series, titled Confederate, that would chronicle an alternate history in which the Confederacy won the Civil War.

The backlash was immediate and forceful, with many claiming that promoting such a series in light of the battle over Confederate monuments (which lead to the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia less than a month later) was inappropriate and tone-deaf.

Speaking directly about the announcement’s poor timing, HBO CEO Richard Plepler said the network “screwed up in an important way,” Deadline reported.

Plepler said the show intended to unite rather than divide, and showcase “what we call the thin line, the thin veneer of civilization–that’s what we were meant to explore.”

“Where we screwed up was we tried to explain a complicated subject in a press release in three paragraphs,” he said at Tuesday’s Vanity Fair summit.

In any alternate history timeline, systematic slavery would be destroyed by the internet. The organized backlash against it would be so severe that it would not be profitable. Secondly, why would slavery still exist if the US didn't have industries that need slavery anymore?

My guess would be that this series will have a moronic shotglass-depth story that never explains why the Confederacy or slavery could survive into modern day society. We're just supposed to accept that it exists even when it shouldn't in that universe. I hate stories like that with a passion, because it's lazy writing.

Game of Thrones (the series) was so good because of George R.R. Martin, not the writing of D&D. I don't think they should be credited with making Game of Thrones great, given how sloppy the writing turned when the books ended. Season 7 was lazy and shallow, leading me to believe Confederate will be too.

I expect a hackish, network TV-quality abomination, and nothing more.
