October 4, 2017 at 12:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Roanoke Times: Radford University and Virginia Tech turned over documents containing personal information, including names, addresses and cellphone numbers of about 40,000 current students, to progressive political group NextGen Virginia, which is working to boost voter turnout among college students in the Nov. 7 election.
NextGen Virginia requested the public information through Freedom of Information Act requests sent to every state-supported college and university in Virginia to obtain cellphone numbers of current students.

Operatiom. I am not a happy camper when I receive those calls.

I doubt all those students supplied that information to the college with the knowledge that it would be released through a FOIA request. Frankly, I don't think such information should be subject to such requests, without a release of it by those listed in the information.
Now, that data is in non-public hands. There is nothing preventing that organization from selling the data to others as a fundraising tool. I'd be thoroughly pissed off, if I were a student at those schools.
Something is wrong with this.

(3,613 posts)3. And if Facebook becomes a government entity, that info will be available for 1/3 of Earth via FOIA
1/4 of the world uses Facebook each month, bumped it to 1/3 for the Facebook lurkers like me.
