This is ancient wisdom.

(1,990 posts)Washington and Eisenhower. Carter was on submarines, and JFK was on PT boats
Rollo
(2,559 posts)Same for JFK, never a career military man.
Eisenhower? Not one of our best presidents.
Point is, yeah, lots of presidents have had military experience but few of them were career military men and of those, most kind of sucked at civil office. Grant, for one, who ran one of the most corrupt administrations in history.
I'm not saying military men are bad people, quite the contrary. It's just that a military approach is ill suited to leading a nation subject to a civil or legal constitution. The military is based on slavish devotion to duty, a rigid command structure, and ultimately in violence and death as needed. These are not qualities that lend themselves to running a nation in peace with any appreciable degree of freedom for its citizenry.
Washington may well be the exception that proves the rule. But then, a lot of founders wanted to make him king instead of president. What does that tell us?

(1,990 posts)He made his reputation at the Battle of New Orleans, but his presidency was awful. He stole land from the Indians, and exchanged slavery.

(37,648 posts)Many Presidents chose to serve in the military and regarded it as a highlight of their lives. As opposed to serving in Nat'l Guard as a ploy to get out of the draft (Bush Jr.).

(2,559 posts)And plenty of guardsmen got sent to 'Nam, at least those without congressmen as fathers...
It's a question of definitions. As the one who made the statement that some have objected to, it's my right to define what I meant by "military man". That definition is restricted to career soldiers and officers, not to those who enlisted and served a few years, and then went onto something else, non military, for the rest of their adult lives.
My statement, my definition.

(37,648 posts)Many Presidents have been military dudes or had some military experience.

(2,559 posts)Although it probably on average makes them more thoughtful about starting another war, ex-corporal Hitler notwithstanding. The closest Trump ever got was being banished to a military school when he was 13. After rising to the level of captain, he had his command yanked from him under allegations of hazing and incompetence, and he was "promoted" to a desk job. Which probably gave him a lifelong inferiority complex, for which he has overcompensated with bluster, harassment of women, name-calling of opponents, and an extreme focus on material wealth.
How might we best promote Trump out of the command he now abuses?

(50,559 posts)Eisenhower was DEFINITELY a career military man, and he was a good president.
Rollo
(2,559 posts)His tenure was characterized by his ineffectiveness at reigning in the forces he publicly disparaged ("the military industrial complex" , a major economic recession, a deepening of the Cold War resulting from his bumbling of the U2 flights over Russia, the USA falling behind in space and technologically in general. Plus he paved the way for one of the worst, Richard M. Nixon.

(2,559 posts)It was first proposed in Congress in 1939, and a bill was passed in 1944, but not funded. Congress finally funded a system in 1956. Eisenhower had been impressed by Hitler's autobahns when we invaded Germany at the end of WWII, but even Hitler wasn't the first to construct such a system. It was his ally, Mussolini, who first constructed such a system, in Italy.

(37,648 posts)Teddy Roosevelt. Eisenhower. George Washington. Some others. It depends on the person.
Look at the bad Presidents we had that didn't serve in the military. Bush Jr., Trump, Hoover.
Rollo
(2,559 posts)I earlier defined "military man" as being a career soldier or officer. Few of our presidents meet that criteria, such as Washington, Grant, Eisenhower. Not Roosevelt. Washington is for traditional reasons beyond reproach. Grant, great general, poor president. Eisenhower? Great general, mediocre president.

(14,174 posts)"The Storm" term introduced to us by the orange boor seemed said more in bravado than remorse. Then when questioned about what he meant he answers the question with.. "we have the world's great military people in this room I will tell ya that"
Could there be some big military action set to go forward? He'd get the inevitable war bounce unfortunately where there is a sense towards dropping everything, and it being incumbent to rally support for any nationalist symbols, even the present day Presidency. Some giant doggy wag, that can go bang bang and distract his legal issues, and rally moderate Rs looking for any reason to find solace in their vote, and crystallize even more his hardcore deplorables base. Some adventure that he probably has been biting his lip over trying to keep it quiet and follow his own advice. I hope not. But he just looked a little too pleased with himself in that clip. And General Kelly is rumoured to be resigning for some reason..

(20,818 posts)and since he isn't about power and self-aggrandizement, I'm really surprised he's managed to last this long. When I saw his very understandable reaction during Drumpf's U.N. "speech", I figured it was only a matter of very short time before he just couldn't take it anymore. I've heard he told colleagues and friends who asked why he'd serve in such a capacity and how he could take it that he thought he could control at least some of the madness and could try to rein Trump in when needed. He probably just couldn't take it anymore.
God help us all now.
