That doesn't mean he isn't a dumb fuck. It's just that he has one true talent - media manipulation.

In practice everything he has said something crazy I have looked to see what he is trying to keep out of the headlines. Like with the NFL for example we had the Trump email thing land right after that, and that is just the most recent I can think of.

So working backwards it does appear that there is a method to his madness. However we have to at least acknowledge that we might be falling prey to confirmation bias. There is a non-zero chance that Trump is just batshit crazy, or doing it for the lulz or doing exactly what Putin tells him to do on a day to day basis and he has no clue why.
