(52,253 posts)they hated the clinton surplus so much they actually had alan greenspan testify about all the supposedly disastrous consequences of actually paying off the debt.
that's right, after clinton paid down a small amount of the national debt, and they freaked out about the theoretical possibility of what would happen if they paid down 100% of the debt without changing policies.
they used that "nightmarish" fantasy as an excuse to push through a ridiculous tax cut for the rich so that we wouldn't have to see surpluses ever again.
however much they say they hate deficits, they hate surpluses more.

(14,566 posts)all of the 90s, these assholes screaming deficit and the end of the world because of it ...
Then, they get POTUS with a balanced budget and all it took was their brainwashing conservative media to babble "YOU CAN'T TRUST GOVERNMENT WITH A SURPLUS" and that was what their dullards started parroting.
Toss us common folks a couple hundred dollar tax "rebate" to grease the wheels.
NOW, with the budget in the red ...
BIG TAX CUTS, from a POTUS who ... won't release his tax returns.
WE don't, but this country deserves what is coming.
