Charles Pierce: For Romney The Gloves Are OFF,and That's The Problem

JUL18
For Romney, the Gloves Are Off, and That's the Problem
By Charles P. Pierce
at 10:38AM

There are, of course, a few problems here. The first one is that, when you start borrowing talking points — the president wasn't "vetted" in 2008 — from Princess Dumbass of the Northwoods, you're already running a few lengths below the intellectual Mendoza line. The second is logical; we already know far more about the president's relationship with both Tony Rezko and cocaine than we do about Willard Romney's relationship to the U.S. tax code for the years, say, 1999-2008. The third is strategic; if you have to remind people that you're preparing to get tough, you've pulled your own punch before throwing it. And the last one is perceptual; Willard Romney — and most of his surrogates — look utterly ridiculous in the role of political hatchetmen.
This is the new, tougher Willard Romney, who is so damned rugged that he's afraid of what the president's people might do with the information in his tax returns. This is the saloon brawler who won't shut up about all the mean things the president's "opposition research" might do to him. This is Willard Freaking Romney, for pity's sake, of whom an "adviser" warns the president:

About his youthful indiscretions that Obama has already admitted to and written about in his book? It's not like he tried to hide it and they're just now blowing the secret.

If they want to hit the gutter I say we start talking about Mormonism and the cult it really is. That ought to cause trouble with the evangelicals.

"youthful indescretions" then I think a re-examination of the "youthful hijinks" of the Mittster might well be in order.

You know, like assaulting another student because he was gay? Laughing after walking a blind teacher into a door? Pretending to be a state trooper so he could stop and harass women drivers in the middle of the night?

Many of us experimented with drugs when we were younger. Been there, done that. But how many of us were gay-bashers and prone to impersonating the police as a way to "meet" women?

By all means, Mittens, take off the mittens.

This is going to be sweet.

in the far right of his party. He is afraid to talk about his record as gov of Mass and won't talk about his wealth-building and tax-evading strategies at Bain. That the GOP put up such an unworthy man as their champion just shows how bankrupt is the Republican brand.

regurgitating the birther issue. Un-American Sunnuuuooo and other far right wingers claiming that Pres O is not an American, and Darth Cheney appearing and trying to stop the military cuts AND Bush with a book telling us how he saved the USA.

Mittens refusal of releasing his tax returns, Sacr-borg conspiracy 24/7 plots on the internet, and Mitten's campaign asking for potential VP's for their tax returns going back many years.

Corporate media blind eye again, and polls in favor of a tight presidental race.

His piece on the (much-loathed by DUers and justifiably so ) S.E. Cupp was one of the great journalistic demolition jobs:

"In case you've missed it, MSNBC has compensated for the loss of Dylan Ratigan in the afternoon by moving Martin Bashir to 4 p.m. Eastern, and filling Bashir's old 3 p.m. slot with something called The Cycle, which is kind of Around The Horn for young pundits. The regular cast includes the younger generation among MSNBC's apparently inexhaustible reservoir of Political Analysts. These include Krystal Ball, Steve Kornacki, Touré, and S.E. Cupp and, this afternoon, as the program was winding down, Ms. Cupp spent a good four minutes being, weight for age, the dumbest person in the history of cable television:"

"I remain convinced that American conservative thought is now not a philosophy but, rather, a book of spells, a series of conjuring words that have meaning only to the initiates". Perfect! That explains why the word salad gibberish that Bachmann-Palin-Cain produce is unintelligible to the rest of us but carries deep significance to the 27% (crazification factor) base.
